Your topic is confusing lol

I think you mean 100L Macro vs 100 (non-L) Macro, yes?

In that - you get a nicer build lens, weather sealed, and hybrid IS. Bah, you know what:

Just watch that he hits it pretty good, dead on.

For macro stuff at weddings?

How much would you use this for? Ring shots? Handful of shots?
If so, then why bother? Get some Kenko Extension Tubes and put the rest of the money towards something else you may need.

I use my 100L for only a handful of shots are weddings. It does GREAT, but makes me wonder if it's worth it. Of course, I am all set with lenses so I can afford to kind of keep it, but still, I always wonder...

Search on this site. There have been scores of postings on this. But I think Rick is right: the main difference in practice is the IS.

Thats what i'm debating on. I wanted to use this as a all around lens, but i'm thinking now lol How good are the kenko tubes compared to the others?

I don't find IS particularly necessary for 100mm, especially with a 2.8 aperture.

If you can afford it, and won't regret spending the money, go for the L, because IS, whether or not you regard it as necessary, is a nice addition, and the price of the L isn't that high. But don't expect to have better IQ out of it.

As far as extension tubes, they're just hollow tubes. I personally got some delta econo extension tubes from ebay, you can find the same ones rebranded on adorama, for quite a bit cheaper than the kenkos, and they work just as well. The difference is that the kenkos are/have metal, and these econo ones are plastic. They have non-econo ones that are still cheaper than the kenkos though, and those are metal too. I'm of the opinion that when it comes to empty tubes, you should get the cheapest ones that can support your gear without risk of breaking, because more expensive ones don't bring any other benefits usually.

You won't shoot macro shots at 2.8, and when you stop down to get the subject in focus, the hybrid IS becomes very apparent.

Here was my take on it that I posted in another thread:

I have owned both the 100mm macros, and ended up keeping my non-L. I didnt like the Hybrid IS system in the 100L. Sounded clunky and I didnt like how it flops around a bit inside the lens barrel when the lens is unmounted. I didnt like the build quality, IMO is was not up to L standards. As mentioned ealier, IS doesnt really help with macro photography if you use a flash, which I always do. I didnt like that I had to buy an additional $40 adapter to use the 100L with my MT-24EX flash. I didnt like that the 100L was not a standard filter size like 58mm or 77mm which ALL my other lenses match. There is also the annoying issue of the new tripod ring mount setup on the 100L. On the non-L you can buy a $40 adapter from Canon that allows you to use the common tripod ring mounts from the MP-E 65, 70-200 2.8's, 100-400L, and a couple others, but on the 100L you cant use those and it instead uses a very expensive and, much less common one. And lastly, since the IQ, bokeh, and colors for both lenses was so equal there was no justification for the upgrade there either. Needless to say I returned the 100L and kept my non-L.

Nah, I tried two and one in a local shop. Others have mentioned it too. Its a newer style of IS, which is why its called Hybrid IS and I think it uses cheaper components. The whole lens IMO was built cheaper. You can feel it compared to other L lenses. The 100L is very plasticy.

No its called hybrid IS because it offers IS in a 3rd vector... what in the world.. It might make some noise if you shake it because the IS element is allowed to stabilize left/right, up/down, but also forward/backward. But then again, who in the world judges a lens by "shaking it" lol.

And who cares that it wasn't 58 or 77mm? How is that "standard"? None of my lenses were 58mm...

Regardless of what it offers, its still a new version (ie different) than other lenses that have IS from Canon which means my statement is still true.

And hey, OP asked what people thought about the two, Im just offering my opinion and findings on the matter. I didnt like the 100L for all the reasons listed above, so I returned it. Thats that. Nothing more to add.
