I'm not sure if this is the right place, but anyway:
I'm looking for recommendations for a portable camcorder to shoot mostly home video, specifically of a newborn.
I know, my 7D can make beautiful videos, but it's not always as handy, there's no autofocus/follow focus, so I've figured to get a dedicated camcorder for all those precious memories.
One of the recommendations was Sony HDR-TD1, which is 3D (isn't everything going to be 3D now?), but a bit costly - ~$1300 at BHVideo. It has great reviews and the thought of having those memories in 3D is very enticing.
On other hand, it's one of the first 3D camcorders, the 3D technology is still in early stages of development, so maybe I should get something cheaper, handier and invest in 3D later on.
Again, 3D is a nice feature, but not a deciding factor and I'm looking for general recommendations in camcorder department.

Thank you in advance,
Aleness

Since you are already a Canon owner, I am partial to the Canon Vixia camcorders. Canon makes several different ones that are full 1920x1080 30p HD resolution. They have 64GB of internal memory which will record way more footage than you will ever need at one time. Mine is a Vixia HF S10, a couple of years old, but basically the same as the current models. The closest one in the current line up seems to be the HF M32. Currently on special at B&H for $600. Way better price than I paid for mine with more memory and several other better features. Click here (external link) to go B&H's page for this camera. For $1000, you can get the same camera but with a viewfinder so you don't have to always use the fold out screen.

3D seems cool, but it hasn't taken off like some of the television manufacturers wanted. There are several competing formats (a la VHS vs. Beta), so caution may be in order to let the dust settle on that one.

Good luck with your search.

I'm also partial to Canon for both cameras and camcorders. I have an older model, HG10, which I'm very happy with. One thing that you should consider very carefully, apart from the camcorder itself, is its accessories, particularly the external mic. When shooting outdoors, you'll need an external mic just about at all times as the built-in mic would pick up any breeze in the air as hissing sound. If you're also looking at the wide-angle lens (I have, and I highly recommend it as your shooting flexibility opens up dramatically), then I'd recommend that you just look at the Canon models.

Haven't considered Canon camcorders before, but will look into them.
Thank you, guys.
