Over the weekend I was just confirming my MA settings on my cameras on some lenses and writing them down in a place where I keep the serial #'s etc. I recently purchased a 50mm 1.4 and 50mm 1.8 and hadn't MA'd them. The 5DII benefited from a couple clicks of MA backward. The method I used for the 5DII was to set up my lens align, line it up, and take a few shots checking the DOF in the camera screen and moving the images over for comparison.

I then decided to try to MA the 7D and 50mm 1.4 with a different method. Still used the LensAlign, lined it up, tethered the 7D to my laptop and did the Quick Mode focus with tethered shooting where you zoom to infinity and then hit focus, it uses the camera to focus like ordinary (not like live view) and then click forward or back on the manual focus buttons and that indicates your MA adjustments necessary.

Thing is, my 85 1.2, 100mm, etc., all worked like this perfectly. I had repeatable results. Quick Mode focus from thethered shooting, focus a little out, click click click click, sharp focus, add MA setting of +4 or -4 depending, redo, perfect. However, when I put the 50mm lenses on, one click of the small focus adjustment button in the live view window resulted in a massive focus jump forward or backward. Like, probably the equivalent of 15 clicks on any of my other lenses.

What gives?!

So why bother posting?

It's straight forward and I think it may even be how canon recommends. You just tether and use quick mode and look at the results. Hit the focus buttons on screen until its sharp. Then you know how many clicks = which way to MA. Not complex at all. Point is, on most of my lenses a click moves the focus a little bit. Yet, on my 50mm's, a click moves the focus a ton.

It may be because the 50mm has coarser increments since it does not use a true ring USM motor

Could be - seems weird though - like, then, does MA adjust even work? Like if I can't focus small amounts with the manual focus buttons and those are supposedly linked to what would be a "1 MA" adjustment, does the 50mm 1.4 / 1.8 even MA adjust?
