I"m trying to see which one would be more effective and why? Can someone point me in the right direction. Thanks!

I assume the 100L is a 100mm macro (doh), I'd go for the tubes, you can use them on any lens and they are cheap.
But ultimately you decide.

100L can be used for both macro and potraits. With kenko extension tubes you will loose infinity focus. I used extension tubes and they can be used with any lens. I found it difficult to work with tubes, but again its personal preference. I like 100L for macro as well as potraits.

Get the lens. It is great, as mentioned above, for portraits and macro. The hybrid IS is a wonder and it will allow you to shoot hand held macro. Once you get the lens, then you can see if you are happy with the magnification of the lens for macros. As I was not satisfied and I invested in the kenkos. Now I have the ability to double the magnification of the 100L and the I love the combo. Just like a 1.4x on a telephoto, the kenkos make the macro lens better.

100L will get you SHARP macros and SHARP and creamy portraits .. with tubes, at the end of the day, you still need a lens :)

IMO, unless you wanna take pictures of plant cells and dust particles, 1:1 from the 100L will keep you very happy :)

BTW, I got both and I have not touched the tubes since I got the 100L .. maybe time to unload, eh?

Guys, if I use extension tubes for 100L macro, will the lens loose the auto focus capability?

For $10 eBay tube without those contact, No AF
With Canon or Kenko tube: AF work.

It gets a little tricky, but it did work for me when I used them together the other day, but I haven't used them together often enough to say if it is consistant. Most of the time I find myself having to manually focus until I get close.

Even if you have to manually focus with this combo, it is still a very nice combo.

Brian v. could probably answer this question better than I could.

I am tempted to get the tubes for my 70-200 f4. It might be interesting.
But I am extremely happy with my Tamron 90mm Macro. Super sharp!

Get both. You will get great 1:1 shots with just the lens, then you will become addicted and get the tubes anyway so you can get closer.

I assume you have a lens to use with the extension tubes. I would highly recommend getting some basic non electrical (i.e. no AF or aperture adjust) extension tubes to test out if you like the IQ and magnification.

I bought these in the UK they are very good for the price. Sturdy machined aluminium.

£8 delivered.

(Just make sure you press and hold DOF preview at the desired aperture before removing the lens from the camera to set the aperture).
