Each 6-inch wide frame of HEXAGON film capturing a wide swath of terrain covering 370 nautical miles had a resolution of about 2 to 3 feet (0.6 to nearly 1 meter). (external link)

So if we say (5280/3)*370 then we get 651200 for resolution. But hey it is 6 inch film.

Still amazing resolution, can't wait to hear the cost. ;-)a

Oh yeah! don't forget the 60 miles of film.

You'd want a UV filter on that baby!

I'd get one, but I heard it has no direct print button. Fail.

If you must know...

In a previous life (business life), I worked with several military electronic contractors. This was from 1984 to 2001 when the hi tech bubble burst. In the mid 90s, the US military satellites had cameras that could read the writing on a pack of cigarettes.. or so I was told. It would be fun to be able to confirm the claims my customers made to me in private. As things get declassified over time, perhaps this will be possible.

Well, theoretically perhaps. But I think atmospheric dust & heat distortion etc would cause major problems.

That's a HUGE amount of film!

I hope we can see anything we need to see.

Rob,

You are probably correct. As I said.... I have no way of substantiating the claims, but I found them interesting. I suspect our spy satellites are capable of some pretty interesting stuff... things way above my pay grade.

I'm sure that they the military has a plug in for photoshop that helps correct all that distortion. ;)

I want to see what a roll of film 60 miles looks like!

Cool article that shows pictures of a 'live' satellite being moved into position with the film canisters visible and the picture of a canister being recovered.
