I took a chance (turns out a big chance) on Craigslist and bought this thing from Victor Manuel of VM Studios Photography. The history was that it came from a relative who was a pro and that it was babied but definitely well used having had at least one shutter replacement. The externals were flawless so it certainly had been looked after. I fired off a few shots during the purchase and all worked fine until I got it home and the dreaded err99 reared it's ugly head. It would work for maybe ten shots then, uh oh, err99. Reset, few more shots, err99. Tried every err99 test/fix out there and nothing worked. Texted Victor who said simply that it worked when he had it. I have no way of verifying this but also no reason not to believe it except for the crazy luck that this appeared to happen for the first time just as I got it home. Fast forward to today having just picked it up from Sanford Camera Repair in Arlington, MA. On initial inspection the tech said it was a shutter issue which they could replace for a good price so I left it with them. Called yesterday to check on it and was told that the shutter hadn't solved the problem. On picking it up today I learned that not only had the shutter not fixed it but now the camera was completely non-functional. The on off switch has no effect but the camera will occasionally bring up the time/date screen regardless of the switch position while none of the buttons respond. Basically either it died completely during the repair or their tech broke it. It's moot either way and, to Sanfords credit, they didn't charge me. So to recap, risky CL purchase, camera works during demo, broken by the time I get it home. Hoping Canon can come up with the history for the serial number so that I can at least verify the camera's history. Sent for repair, 'yup, shutter, no problem' to 'oh sorry we broke your camera completely'. Hell of a first foray into the 1D world. Anyone want a 1D MkII N for parts? ![]()
I used to think I was indecisive, but now I'm not too sure.

Im betting when Canon gets it the repair cost wont be too painful. The "not working after repair" could be something as simple as a ribbon not inserted correctly or the internal fuse is blown (Im pretty sure all Canon DSLRs have one). I sent my 10-22 lens in for estimate (bought on craigslist, but I knew it had water damage and wouldnt autofocus). Only cost $150 to replace the ultrasonic motor - making my total purchase price for the mint lens $350. Ive sent several lenses to Canon in Jersey for repair with great results - fast turn around and what I believe to be good, fair prices. Post details of your progress,Im anxious to know what the end result is...Im betting its going to go in your favor! Thanks for the response

New here and just picked up a 1D MkII N as a second to my Sony A99 for situations that require really quick focus and the ability to survive some serious abuse. The Sony is tough but I really don't feel like risking the lenses or testing it against rocks, trees and me falling on it. The reason I got the Canon is the price and it's reputation, plus the fact that I inherited a couple of EF lenses with an old EOS 620 and so have them kicking around (EF 35-70mm and non-USM/IS 100mm 2.8 Macro) so I figured why not? Unfortunately after taking a chance on a pristine model from Craigslist (yeah I know, alarm bells ringing) it developed an occasional Err 99 with associated shutter release noise after a few seconds (curtain twitching but not moving). Jury's out on whether or not the seller already knew bout it but he managed to get off about 30 or 40 shots with me without it failing. I'm not too upset as I took a chance on a high shutter count (not known but it had had a replacement already). Body count was something like 350K plus but the replacement shutter was around 20K. It's in the shop right now for a shutter replacement for pretty reasonable money so I'm hoping to get a pristine MkII N back and have some fun making this thing look like all the others I see on eBay. Anyhow, externally it's in quite literally out-of-the-box condition and I'm really looking forward to enjoying it and hopefully running my new shutter into the ground! ![]() Incidentally I might be looking to trade the 100mm macro for something a little more action friendly, be it Tamron/Sigma/EF prime or zoom or similar. Must have been used for time lapses. There's no other way to accrue that high a shutter count without wearing out the camera in some way, no matter how well you take care of it. It's going to show wear after 350k. Pretty foolish to do that to a 1d mk2 though since you can pretty much use any dslr for time lapses.
