Invariably non-oem units have poorer end caps and latches than genuine Canon so you can remove two little screws on the end cap (tiny watch-making size screws) and swap the Canon end caps for the non-oem ones and it fits nicely then.

So I recently picked up a 1D Mark II (not N) with only 15k shutter actuations.

Now, knowing the age of the camera and it's not supported, I'm wondering if I can get the same quality results with a 5D 1, 5D 2, 70D, 60D or 80D etc. I have a T3I and with a prime or L lens it's a damn good imaging sensor as well under solid lighting.

I know the 5D 1 even has better color depth and about the same contrast. However I've noticed out of this 1D2 that the colors are spot on target and each seems to be clearly defined. SO....

Is it something I should move to being a backup or used only for sports with the 45 point focus and add one of these older or newer bodies to get even better images than the 5D 2 delivers?

I'd say use what you have until it breaks if you're happy with it. Having got 4 of the mk2 versions and refuse to sell even one of them I can vouch for their file integrity - it solid and reliable. Just limited to ISO ceiling of 3200 but 1600 is useable with a spot of post noise control. Just don't under-expose as the older sensors hate that!

Thanks Steve, thanks for the response. Well, I may have found a camera to replace it. This is why I need expert advice. I have the T3i, not a fan of 1.6 crop, but the 1D2 is a crop anyway. So check this out. It seems that the new canon T6i which also will shoot video with AF, full size screen (PS, I cheat with my 1D, pixel peeping by swapping card to the t3i to look) but the T6i is 24 megapixels.
12EV dynamic range vs 11.1 on my 1d2 (non N)
and Color at 22.7 bits vs 22.3

So that's one direction I'm leaning. I have to say for it to have taken this long for consumer gear to finally surpass it does prove the quality of the camera and if and when funds are available I can see the 1dX's being a good investment if I could afford it.

I have a 7D, 1D lll, and a 1d2n. Out of those three, I actually like the photos that come out of the 1D2n better. Then the 7 and then the 1Dlll. There is a reason these cameras were $4000 and up new. How much is the T6i?

If you need video then by all means go for the T6i. But everything else, focus system and so on is better. Now keep in mind, we are leaving ISO out of the equation.
