I'm looking to go wide on my 1dII. Thinking about the 24 2.8, because it's right in my price range. I maybe could stretch for the 20 2.8. Any other wide primes you guys would suggest? I'm not opposed to 3rd party, but i'm definitely looking for AF

I'd say either the 20 2.8 if you want wide, or 28 1.8 if you want fast.

16-35 v.I sell for over 1000. V.II's for 1400ish.

17-40 and 20-35 both fit your price range.

Prices have gone up a bit ! I may have been off a hundred or so, but i know i didn't pay $1000 for my v.1

Brandon,
I've used the 16-35, and then I actually ended up buying the 17-40. My reasoning was that for most of what I would use a lens in this focal range, I would likely be stopped down to f/8 or so anyway, so why pay for the speed of the 16-35 ?
The 17-40 is a really nice lens, and I have many nice images from it on the several 1.6 bodies ( 20D and 40D ), a couple of 1.3 bodies ( 1D2 ) and the full frame 1DS. On the FF it's really fun.

I wasnt too impressed with my 20 2.8.

I picked up a really nice 20-35 2.8 I am pretty happy with, but if I didn't find that, I was going to buy a 17-40. I dont think you can go wrong.

I think that pretty much sums up the 17-40. Neat little lens.

And you can always set it up according to the principle of "35mm and be there" and pretty much know you're gonna get the shot.

I always thought it was f/8 and be there...

Well, we're both right, but neither of us are telling the whole story ! ;)

The idea is 35mm, f/8, focus set to the hyperfocal distance, which in this case is 16.9 feet. Everything from 8.5 feet to infinity is in focus. This is based on a 35mm ( FF ) format.

Oh yeah....you have to "be there"......and it would likely be useful to point the camera and go click.

Have had my 1DIIn for only a few weeks. It is the best digital camera I have ever used. I now need to upgrade my lenses.

I have now joined the ranks of owners of the 1D MkIIn with a failed shutter...I've actually owned it for about a year, but the shutter died on me today while shooting a soccer game. I am very glad that I always carry my second body with me as a backup, it saved my butt today as today was senior day for the high school boys team.
I do have to say, it had a pretty long life, making to the ripe old age of 210,000 shutter actuations.

I guess I will be sending it away for repair on Monday.
