The laptop has the 4-pin socket for firewire, the same as the one in the 1DMkIIn. I have a 4-pin to 4-pin. Is there a reason why this doesn't work, then?

Thanks. :)

The extra two pins are for powering the external device, I think, so not a consideration in this case. But I don't know for sure.

I'm gonna see what software I have, see if it's the same as yours and try again. May have to look for firewire drivers for Windows 7 - mine is not ultimate...

I only have vista and windows 7 so i'm trying to figure out what my best option is. By the way i'm also having a tough time at getting my other af points to grab a target and I have 11 active center point selected. All of my shots only show lock on the center point. I just got it not to long ago as a backup.

Thanks,

Now, don't ask me what I did - downloaded drivers for 1dmkIIn, downloaded EOS Viewer utility, updated EOS Utility, messed about in Device Manager and made it say (Legacy) on the firewire driver, (Oh, used Vista drivers/utilities for the ID).

Now, it works...it's a little slow, keeps "not responding" but I have changed the name and also a couple of P-Fn.

Hope it's ok. Will explore more later. :)

I've been trying to change the personal functions using camera window, but always get camera not recognised ... using win8 (64 bit) or xp (32 bit) with camera window 8.8

I wonder what the best solution would be. In the manual it says that you can change your personal functions on camera, but i'm not sure how to do it. It's not taking.

I bought a firewire cable for £1.25 from eBay.

Check the drivers for the 1d. That may have been the issue...it's the only thing I think I did differently this time.

You can change them in camera, but only after setting them as active with the firewire. The could that I altered yesterday are now functions I can change in camera, the ones i didn;t do when connected by firewire are still locked to me in camera.

Try bypassing Camera Window. Just start up EOS Utility manually first and then connect the camera and start it up (or activate it). After a few seconds EOS Utility will close and then start up again and should be fully functional. At least that's how I got it to work on my Mac. Maybe it'll work on a pc too?

Actually mine did something like that...EOS Utility started, then stopped, then started again. :)

Men and ladies,
I just picked up a mint iD MKIIn as a back up to my 7D. I never thought I would be using it primarily over the 7D. I am discovering some limitations that may be my fault. I have mainly used it for indoor basketball, which is a strain on the camera, and the 7D for that matter. I hiked with it the other day and missed focus too many times. I had center point squarely on the eye of my subject, yet got soft images. Some were good. I was using my 300 2.8 alone and with a 2X TC. Sometimes I get the same spotty results with the 70-200 2.8 II.
I'm betting it is a setting in the camera. Any tips or advice most welcome.
I use al servo, center point, ISO about 200-400 outside, Av mode, and usually shoot full open to f4. I want this body to work out for me. Am I seeing what 8.2 mp vs 18 mp looks like? Would sharpness be close without major cropping?
