How do you take credit card payments?

I have Square. I like it so far. What I don't like:

-No customer support number to call if you have a problem. Yes, I said NO phone number. If you have a question, you have to email and wait.
-When you're starting out, they will only credit a certain amount per week to your account until they, "verify," the account you're depositing your funds into. Can take 30 days to collect the rest! I really don't like this as other companies I've used do not make you wait so long.
-The reader is tiny. Partially a good thing but easy to lose the reader because it's so darn small.

Overall, I like the idea. I was using Intuit--which I loved--but hated paying the monthly fee since I would use it in spurts and not use it for a few months. I love being able to use my phone to take payments. Very convenient.

My understanding on the $ limit is that it's removed if you go through the process of verifying you are a legit business...which makes sense..

There is a way to request a higher limit after you prove your business worthiness. I made the request and got approved with no problem.

I read that, just haven't needed to yet. How do you make the request?

I mentioned it as a negative but it's certainly not a big enough of a deal to bother me all that much. It is, however, something others need to know before using their service. Overall, I really like it.

Somewhere on their website in the FAQ's or help section, there is a link to the request form. My problem was I shoot events and they may be scattered out on the calendar. But I bring in more in sales than they would send to my account at one time. After sending in the request, they raised it to cover the intermittent, but large sales. Part of the problem was taking the orders over the phone and punching in the credit card info. I am good to go now.

So far, after several months all has worked according to plan.

Intuit GoPayment has no monthly fee by default but you can pay monthly for a lower discount rate.

I'd heard about that. I think that's a newer service they've launched. I really liked dealing with Intuit, great customer service when I used them. Might check them out again.

I'm echoing others, but I'd also recommend Square as your initial foray into accepting credit cards. You can even buy a Square reader at Best Buy for $10, sign up online to start using it immediately, and get the $10 re-reimbursed to you.

Later, if your credit card business becomes significant, looking into the new offerings of the "traditional" merchants for better deals (and they do exist if you've got any significant volume) may be worthwhile.

PayPal needs to step up its game in a lot of areas...it was okay back in the day when Internet sales were a new concept, but it's behind the times now.

Just ordered Square two days ago in anticipation of starting my business. It seems like the easiest so far.

I "ordered" a second reader a while back. One stays in the camera bag, the other stays in the laptop bag. I have threepointfivepercentaphobia.
