I'm trying out my 300 indoors for volleyball. It's been frustrating but it's beginning to bear fruit.

C/C Welcome

What part is frustrating? I think I'm about to try a 400.

It was frustrating figuring out where the ball would land. With such a narrow angle of view, it was perplexing.

I would drop your shutter speed a tad, at least to 1/800. Some of these pics look a little noisy, you can save on ISO with a drop in SS. I shot the men's national championship at 1/800 and it worked fine, I'm sure you can avoid blur at that speed, especially with women playing at the high school level.

Some nice shots, like number 4 best. They do look a tad noisy for the mk4 at 3200 ISO.

They do look a lot better in my computer. I'm wondering if some of the noise comes from Aperture 3 downsizing the images to 800 pxl. I've gotten that comment before but the prints look great.

I was thinking the same thing. Nice shots though. It's tough with a prime, but you pulled it off.

I would disagree with dropping the shutter speed... Just use a bit of noise reduction in PP. For volleyball that I shoot, 1/800 is too slow and I get ball blur and hand blur when photographing hits and digs. For photographing the setter, 1/800 is probably fine though.

These were all shot at 1/1000 of sec.

I'm wondering now if the noise is from my jpeg quality setting. Next time I'll increase that.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Shooting in Jpeg or RAW?
If in Jpeg have a look at the in camera noise reduction settings I was pretty stoked with my first noise tests at 3200 ISO with the standard noise reduction settings in Jpeg and just as happy at 6400 and 12800 considering what I was getting with my mk2.

I would love to have a gym I could shoot 1/800 in =). Seeing now that he has a Mark IV , I agree a shutter speed drop probably isn't needed. I just saw noise and SS of 1/1000 in the EXIF and thought that would be the first thing to sacrifice.

JB --- looks like most of your photos are a bit slanted with respect to the bleacher's in the background.

Nice shots for not having a great handle on it.... but aren't #1 and #3 a bit "illegal" actions?

Not at all. Clean as can be. They are just really good captures where the ball is right in the players mitts. 3 is ESPECIALLY clean, hard to have a lift call with your hands that high above your head.

400 is doable from the top of a rafter. I only used it for some stock images during warmups. I might try to use it in a game but it is pretty tight on a 1.3 crop.
