I'm not sure I have this right, but as I understand it, you could take a MKIII with a 400 5.6 and add a 1.4 TC and it would still autofocus at F8
If you took that same combination and put it on a 7D, you would loose autofocus if you tried to go above 5.6

Right on, but with a 1.4x on the 7d, it's at f/8 and won't autofocus
