Stranger! :(

This looks good Tony. Ive been intrigued with focus stacking but have never attempted it myself. Good work. I learned some for your explanation.

I hear ya. Gonna be awhile before I try it. Premiere is so much fun, I'm not ready to lay it down yet.

OK Mitch, I did it -- I ran the script and loaded four of the files!

I chose to "Attempt to automatically align source images" -- that's important for this! Each of my shots was a bit to the left, right, up, down, whatever, but the important thing was that the spider itself was holding its "pose", so that the Photoshop Align function worked very well!

The Photomerge function out of Bridge has that as well.

I should note that this worked well because the background on these images was so soft/out of the DOF that there was no detail to "confuse" the alignment. Obviously, for this to work well you want to have details line up, or you will have some kind of headaches -- "helping" the software align!

So, what the process did was to load the four files into layers that were "spider-aligned", so that you had your borders a bit off but the spider was dead-on.

Now, so far so good, but then that's where it stopped -- there were not masks! So here's the Layers palette:

HOSTED PHOTO
please log in to view hosted photos in full size.

Now this is where I backed up earlier: needing layer masks for each image (although not so much for the bottom one) and then manually filling them with black before I could even start working on them! Now sure, it's not a complicated thing (except I forgot how to tell Photoshop to fill a layer with the foreground/background color:() but I did remember that Bridge did have a function for this, and so I closed all the stuff and started over from Bridge. The Photomerge function does create the masks, made the bottom layer white over the whole spider, and the rest of the masks black over the whole spider, perfect! From there it was just painting white over selected parts in the layer masks, progressing from the layer above the bottom one (no Background "protected" layer, so either lock it or just don't mess with it unless it is really called for). Of course, one thing about using masks is you have to make sure the Mask is selected when you want to brush white/black over it or you have an interesting mess in the actual image -- I did have to resort to Undo once last night:)!

So, yeah, if you run that Stacking script you will have to manually add masks. From there, for this project, leaving the bottom layer mask white and then filling the upper layers with black would have been the way to go. From there, I just work up one layer at a time brushing in the details. At some point it can also be helpful to turn off the visibility of layers you aren't actually working on -- black areas show up with the transparent "checkerboard" whereas white areas show the image that you are working on. It can also be useful to show the mask "overlay" (the areas where you have brushed) in the display but I don't remember the Photoshop command to do that so I didn't mess with it...

Anyway, either way, but I do prefer the automation of Photomerge:)!

By the way, any of you who aren't familiar with Mitch/"Canonloader", well he's been around here for what, five years?

My first "contacts" with Mitch were in the Birds sub-forum, where he has posted some very excellent work! And, he was doing some cool stuff to get some great shots of the little critters!

More recently he has been delving into micro photography, using actual microscopic equipment with his camera to shoot tiny, tiny things, and is getting some awesome results!

Here's his latest from yesterday/last night:

https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1095727

So, I'd encourage people to check out his recent posts in the Macros sub-forum! Of course you can also see his stuff in the Bird section!

Thanks Tony. I'll add, that figuring out how to make a camera get the goods while attached to a microscope is the hardest thing I have ever done. Took me a year to get it figured out. Very frustrating until you start getting good shots, then it's all worth the effort. :)

Well, it's been cool to see the work you've been able to put out! I hope that people will see this and check out your stuff!

Mitch, I just noted your "Bi-cicle" link and checked it out -- cool gear there!

I don't know if you've seen it in the Urban Life and Travel thread, but a few months ago, following some life "incidents", I got an old mountain bike up and running and determined to start using it for my photography. I posted about this in the Lounge, and some people got excited and suggested we start a thread for "Biking Photography" photos. Well, I went along with it and the result was our Biking Photog Thread!

And, it's stayed quite active! Even when I'm not! Check it out!

My bike broke down a couple weeks ago. Broke a bunch of spokes in the rear wheel and haven't got it fixed yet. Might not bother now, since winter will be here in a few weeks. LOL

Hey Omar, I just now saw this -- 'sup?

And yeah, I've been "missing" from the "socializing" threads lately, I seem to have plenty to pre-occupy myself with:)!

Glad I could help out with my little project!

Gotta ask a question...how did you achieve focus in different areas...using a rail or using the focusing ring to dial in different planes of focus?
I used the ring on these droplets https://photography-on-the.net …ghlight=chauncey+droplets

On a side topic...my mode of transportation is one of these, when my kids allow me to use it.

Is that thing legal on the sidewalk? Got a link?

I agree with that. I used CS3 for several years and it's OK, aside from the memory leak, but now I use CS5 and it's a whole other world, and from what I am reading CS5.5 is even better.

It's legal, but it does help if you have handicapped plates on your car as a justification for using the scooter on sidewalks. http://www.scootercatalog.com/three-wheel-scooters.html (external link) There's a lot of them out there...expect about 15-20 miles per overnight charge.
