Im amazed why nobody has developed an app that provides address and gps information for the millions of nice locations and venues for shooting around the country. And not just the big tourist traps either, I'm talking about local off the beaten path places. Scott kelby's book advertised the website. Www.wheretheprosshoot.com (external link), but it's been under construction for the last two years. I doubt it will ever exist, just someone's big idea that never got off the ground.

We need a wiki site where people can post there photos with the requirement that they include gps and other logistical info for every shot. Build it and they will come! I would if I had the time and money.

Yeah, because when I find a good spot the first thing I want to do is invite several thousand other people to come out and get in my way...

Heh! You don't have a location in your user ID -- do you live in Japan, maybe?

Of course I'm being humorous, I assume you are living in the USA, because, well, we consider ourselve a place filled to the brim with photo ops and don't assume the need to identify our location:)!

But. there are a lot of threads started here about places to get great photos, and it can be overwhelming, because for any given region there are just so many!

Some of us here have set up regional maps on Google Maps, which is pretty cool. Also, Google Earth has a feature showing selected photos of "places" -- it can be nice to browse.

If you are thinking of visiting somewhere, or want to visit interesting sites around you, poke around, and ask here in POTN!

Someone already has...

It's called Panoramio http://www.panoramio.com/ (external link)

Then there's also flickr...

I'm sure there is a market out there for something along the line you are thinking of but I would suggest to develop it yourself as you might have to wait awhile for others to get it up and running.

portfolio soon...

Too many great places get ruined by sites that tell of great locations that are off the beaten path. Here in southern CA, we used to have the Wild Flower Hot Sheet. Great for locations on where the wild flowers were happening, updated daily. Mostly for serious photographers. Eventually too many people found out about it and were trashing very nice pristine areas. The author took that part of the site down with an explanation. Families with kids rolling and trampling over everything. ouch! I at least got to benefit from it for 5 years.
