I was there all day and it was dark and cloudy for most of it. The sun came out for about 20 minutes. I don't have the monster lens like most of the guys out there so my shots are major crops from my 7D with 70-200 mkii.

^^ nice shots Mike. Who needs a monster lens when you can capture shots like these especially the 3rd one. I was there on the first day and it's gloomy pretty much all Sunday morning. Pretty sad for the other competitors left behind as soon Kelly and Rob finished their heat and left, majority of the crowd left as well. Quite confusing this event that ended way too early as their schedule was posted til 09-24.

Yup! I only had a 70-200 for Sunday and got some ok frames, I was disappointed they finished by wednesday. I talked to the guy that tracks surf and said that. They give such a long span for the contest. To make sure their is good surf, since the surf is unpredictable. They also don't have that many athletes, since this is just men -- whereas US Open has man/woman jr/pro.

BTW a 400mm works perfect for this contest. Next year I will bring it. I used the van to get to the beach. See you next year at HB!.

I actually took about 600 photos that day. I'm still weeding through them for some keepers.

I knew the day before that they were planning on running through the whole contest on Wednesday so I stuck it out. Although there's always a few pro's out there, it's not often you get them all there at the same time. It's my home break and a 3 minute bike ride from my house, I love it when they have the contest here.

Bummer Jordy and Dane were out
