I just purchased a 24-70 2.8 L and was thinking about selling my 60d and getting a 5d classic because thats what I would be able to afford. Does anyone think its worth the switch?

If you want slower frames per second, slower AF, no video, less mega pixels, worse high ISO performance, no weather proofing at all (compared to the little that the 60D has) then why not.

In all honesty the 60D is a great camera, I would think that buying a 5D would be a downgrade in every single way except for the fact that it is full frame and the 60D is not. Of course some of the 5D enthusiasts will say I am wrong about this.

well i'm not shooting sports so I dont' care about fps
The AF might be a downfall
I never shoot video
More mega pixels doesn't mean squat
and yeah the others would be a downfall.

But I want the full frame so I can that slightly better IQ

what about a 1ds?

I'd go for the 5D before a 1Ds, but a 1Ds 2 would be nice...

I really don't think that the 5D or 1DS are going to offer noticeably better IQ than the 60D or any of the current cameras that Canon is offering. Especially considering that the 5D is 6 years old and the 1DS is a few years older than it.

However I am not saying that it would be "worse", just can't imagine it being "better".

What kinds of "IQ" upgrade are you hoping to see?

So - i am owning a 5D II and a 7D and since i have the 5D II, the 7D isn't used so much. The 5D is a fantastic camera and i enjoy taking pictures with it - nevertheless i say: you are right! There is a noticeable difference in image quality, but there isn't that magic what makes you "wow"! The biggest impact on good pictures has the woman/man behind the camera, then the lens and then the cam. And w/o good light you can forget the rest.

to the OP: my biggest problem in handling when switching from the 60D to the 5Dc would be the display. You are coming from a high resolution display with the perfect 3:2 ratio (swivel or not) to the one in the 5D. Thats a huge step backwards - when checking the pics after shooting. And you have to buy new memory cards - 5D uses compact flash...

Cheers

I wouldn't trade all new features, specially the high resolution screen for a 2.5-inches LCD with 230k pixels screen, that's a huge difference.
I prefer to save up for 5DKII if u really want a FF, and use the 60D meanwhile
The 60D is a very capable camera.

The display isn't that big a deal to me. As long as I can see a histogram I'm good.

To the OP, I'd suggest you spend time checking out the 5D Classic Admirers thread:

https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=996038

Ask there about who has switched from what, and specifically about the 6D (but don't limit it to that), and what their experience has been.

I do have a 5DC but don't have a 60D. My 1.6 crop body is the trusty ol' 30D, so the 5DC had some definite improvements in performance: AF is improved and definitely high ISO/low noise performance. And, the 5DC with its full-frame viewfinder is, well, so nice!

But, I also have a 1D3, and it is my "workhorse" for high performance, delivers great IQ on a par with the 5DC, and, it's weather-resistant, which can be a real plus for this outdoor shooter. My 5DC has shown little problems with just a light sprinkle, so on iffy days the 1D3 is the body of choice.

Now, the interesting thing is that I still get used to all three of these bodies. The 5DC is my walkaround body of choice, as well as my favored landscape body. The 1D3 is, like I said, my workhorse for things like wildlife/birds, sports, many events (although the 5D does handle itself quite well for a lot of things -- I've even gotten some good Birds-In-Flight shots with the 5D!

And, even the 30D gets some use! It's got better "pixels on-target" than the 5DC, and when that comes in handy and the light is good enough to get a good exposure using a low ISO, then the 30D can deliver! Lately, I've been grabbing it for macro shooting and it delivers!

As to the 60D, well, the newer cameras are certainly in a different ballpark. I don't know that I'd consider the 5DC to be "better", except that a lot of the Admirers love it for its "classic" simplicity in delivering great images. Yeah, the rear LCD is small, but you know what? My 1D3 has a nicer LCD, but I mostly use the LCD for shot reviews with the histogram. My 1D3 does have Live View, which I do occasionally use in challenging light conditions, and I'm glad I can, but still the 5DC is great for my general shooting.

I suppose if it was me I wouldn't jump that way. I'd probably hang onto the 60D until I knew that another body would really help me move forward in my photography. Sure, I'd be looking at the 5D2, and sure at the 1D4, but I don't know if I'd be looking at the 5DC except as maybe and enjoyable body to have with the 60D.

I think it is important that you determine what sort of photography that you are into. The 60D is a versatile camera that can do many things brilliantly. A good all rounder of a camera with modern features.
In contrast the 6-yr old 5dc will not have the same feature set as even a T2i let alone a 60d. Having said that, the 5dc is a fantastic image making device. In the hands of an experience shooter, it still churns out images that rivals the best and many considers its IQ superior to the 5d2. Sharper SOOC and pleasing noise. Weak AA filter contributes to the former and large pixel pitch with the latter therefore giving it a film-like quality. Because of it's FF sensor, the gradation of blur is smoother too. To this day, it is still being used in wedding/portrait works.

You will have to decide for yourself if the older 5d is something you want and that you can live without the modern 'amenities' of the 60d. I personally enjoy this classic because it doesn't have all the bells 'n whistles to clutter my photographic experience. Afterall I started out shooting film slr.

Keep in mind that the 60D will likely bring in less than $1000 on eBay (and they levy a fee on top of that) but the 5D "classic" will cost about $1000 as well. It won't be a simple swap.

For what it's worth the 5D Mark II is on sale now. I would wait a month if possible, if you believe the rumors that there's going to be some kind of product announcement in October, anyway (Canon Rumor's 9/22 announcement stuff flopped though).
