I guess it's alright.

I have a friend who uses a macbook pro and I helped set it up and learn how to use it a long while ago even though it was maybe the second time in my life I've even seen an Apple computer, feelings were mixed because I didn't know what the heck I was doing, but the mac seemed to just... do everything on it's own and not be a pain in the ass.

For some reason early this year (or was it last year?) I just decided to get a mac on a whim. I know I needed a new computer for all kinds of heavy jobs, I just didn't know what. I saw some people that had the smaller iMacs and I really liked the look of those, so I went and got a 27"er with all the trimmings; given my circumstances it was faster and easier than custom-ordering a PC.

Using it has been quite refreshing compared to a Wintel, as a lot of things seem very intuitive to me and the hardware doesn't get in the way of doing things. Screen is nice, ability to run Windows is nice, it's good enough for any photo or video task, and it doesn't crash all the time. In almost a year of using it I had only one kernel panic (mac equivalent of BSOD) because I tried to trash corrupted data off of an external drive; totally my fault.

I wondered a while ago if the purchase was worth it because I could have probably gotten a better PC in terms of pure performance and functionality, but on reflection it probably would have been a big bulky box running a system I knew probably would have crashed a dozen times by now, or found a way to slow things down by generating useless data on the hard drive or running useless processes. A windows PC is wonderful when properly configured and maintained, but I'm tired of being a mechanic, I have enough things to think about as it is.

Edit: Also, this thread should technically be in the "Computers" section of the board.

I acquired an expensive camera so I can hang out in forums, annoy wedding photographers during formals and look down on P&S users... all the while telling people it's the photographer, not the camera.

It works okay, provided you calibrate the screen.

I've been using a 27" iMac for all my photoshopping for the past 9 months. I calibrated the screen, and it does a fabulous and very fast job.

So you do need to calibrate them. I was given the impression that they do not need to be calibrated. Maybe one of the geniuses:) meant They come pre-calibrated.

No, you need to calibrate them. There's not terribly off however, but getting that extra black box to show up gives me great comfort.

Yeah, but uncalibrated, the ones I've seen clip blacks and blow out whites.

Another vote for calibration here. They're IPS screens, which is great, but they're also glossy and that causes contrast problems. But calibrated, the 27" iMac is really a photo-editor's affordable dream. And the base-model 27" is really not any more expensive than a comparable custom-built PC with a 27" IPS display with the same super-high resolution. Less expandable, though.

I have a Monaco Optix XR pro.
A photographer I work for, uses an iOne with ColorEyes Display Pro.

They aren't super far off from good out of the factory, I find that mine is perfectly acceptable for my needs, though I can see why someone might want to calibrate their iMac's screen if they are pickier about that sort of thing. (I use a 21.5 incher, and it is just as amazing for photo editing - I have two iMacs sitting on the same desk...not a lot of room for 27 inches of all in one unfortunately)

Avoid ColorEyes Display Pro, no Lion support and doesn't seem like anyone in that company is working on a fix or new product. I think they have one employee/owner who has no respect for customers.
