7000 Miles Nonstop

I ran across this article highlighting the journey of the Bar-tailed Godwit from Alaska to New Zealand that is taking place right now. The flight is nonstop with no food or water and no sleep or rest the entire way. They are confronted by storms and cyclones and many are making the trip for the first time and will lose half of their body weight along the way. Pretty amazing I thought.

And I thought that 18 hour trip the Ruby Throats make across the gulf was amazing. That's a lot of determination the Godwits have, that's for sure. I love bird facts like these, our feathered friends are pretty outstanding with what they go through to get to and from their destinations. Great article Mike, thanks for posting it.

Makes your heart go out o these brave little birds. I still cannot wrap my head around their navigation skills - how in the world do they find their way?!

That is amazing. I too love to hear facts like this about birds. The same Eastern Painted Buntings (banded) make it back to my yard every spring and I thought that was amazing. Puts a new meaning to the phrase 'bird brained'.
