7D Error 20 after firmware update

Last Sunday I updated my 7D firmware from 1.0 to 1.2.5

That day(within an hour of doing the update) I got Error 20. After a while, I got it to go away and was able to continue using the camera.

Today after some shooting at the zoo, the same error came back and now my camera is as useful as a brick.

Dodgy firmware or coincidence? The camera was absolutely bulletproof before i did the update.

As far as I understand error 20 it's a shutter failure but i looked in the camera and everything looks immaculate. I never leave it without a lens on for more than 3-5 seconds.

Also camera is out of canon warranty and has to go in to be fixed by the people i bought my 5 years extended from :( god only knows how long that will take.

Luckily i have a my old 40D to use as a backup.

You could try flashing the firmware again. Also, pull the main battery and the backup battery and let it completely discharge. Maybe that will reset it and the problem will be resolved,

seems that when I pull the backup(which I didn't know existed - thanks) it resets the error. I can then fire the camera again as long as there isn't a lens attached. the moment i put on a lens it errors out if i try to shoot. will try to reflash to the same bios again. definitely looks like a software issue. I knew i shouldn't have flashed it :(

Could be a coincidence...your shutter went bad when you did the firmware update. it happens. take it or send it to someone for repair.

this is stupid... the camera and shutter works just fine with the lens mount capped or open but the moment i attach a lens and press the button it goes to error 20... obviously something has happened because of the firmware update...

some people say you should always update... those people are wrong.

That's weird, I upgraed mine without any error problem. Have you tried to downgrade the firmware?

I can't find a link for any of the 1.2.1/2/3/4 firmware... everything just links to official canon sites and they only have 1.2.5 on them.

I agree with the latter, I've had my 7 almost 2 years put a lot of mileage on it and never had an issue with over 150k shots on the clock. So as far as firmware is concerned the old adge comes to mind - "If it aint bust - don't fix it"

I always check for what fixes are in the new firmware. If it fixes something I've had an issue with, upgrade, if not, just let it be.

I've had mine since april 2010 and it's been bulletproof... until i did this update. I'm pissed beyond measure.

Don't know if there's any truth to the link below........

http://www.foto-biz.com/Canon/Unreleased-firmware-125 (external link)

I used to have a link to Canon Japan that had old firmware, I'll see if I can find it.

Megapixels and high ISO are a digital photographers heroin. Once you have a little, you just want more and more. It doesn't stop until your bank account is run dry.
