I will confess I may be one of the world's worst at making a decent mask, something that is crucial especially in bird photography.
I began using as a trial Topaz Remask and it has become an important part of my work flow.
It takes me about two minutes to make a usable mask and if I were to fiddle with it a little more using the tools of the program I could make a pretty much perfect mask.
You can try it for 30 days no charge.

Here are some screen shots to show how it works.
First I open the image in Photoshop:
Next under the filters I start Topaz Remask and I begin with this screen:
It moves you directly to the basic image brush ( Left Tool Bar) I am using a mouse and I simply outline the edge of the bird with the brush. As you can see I was not too precise in my painting.
Then you click on the red paint bucket and click any place outside of the bird you have outlined. It looks like this after the click.
You click on compute mask and it does it's work leaving you with the mask shown below. There are other options to define the mask if you felt it wasn't perfect. This is the basic mask with no other changes.
If you are satisfied you press okay and it moves it into Photoshop into a background layer it has established. This is what the layer looks like in Photoshop.
They have raised the price since I got it, but Topaz has a lot of specials and they never charge for an update. So all in all not too bad. Its definitely worth the trial download.
Just thought I would pass this along.
