will the 5d give me better images? is it a better camera?

i shoot mainly landscape and village streets/buildings

I went from a 40D to a 5D... For me it was a great decision.

I don't really care about speed or a big LCD... Sensor cleaning is something I miss...

It is all about trade offs, just make a list and see if it is worth it.

Maybe and yes.

Maybe and maybe.

Its better for certain applications. Not all.

For the OP's uses however, yes it should be better.

you can take advantage of wide side with full frame. on teleside you might miss reach, but you can always crop in post too. also when using fast lens, DOF changes are more apparent in shots from bigger sensor.

The difference between crop and full frame is not so much in quantifiable image quality differences as it is a different feel to images. Especially at wider apertures and closer camera to subject distances...

For you it would seem the 5D would be the better choice, you have no need for the reach or speed that a crop body offers where as the wideness and higher resolution of the 5D would be beneficial. However don't be fooled into thinking it will magically improve every photo you take, it just has the potential to do so. However if you're happy with the 40D and perhaps you do need the added speed and reach every now and then maybe you should spend the money on something else, for example if you really need to go wider you can get a crop ultrawide like a 10-20/22mm, or if you need more resolution upgrade to a 50D.

The 17-40 on the 5D should definitely be able to breathe "new life" into your landscape/scenic photography! If you can afford the 5D sure, go for it!

As comparing IQ between the 5DC and the 40D, well, I never had a 40D so can't say directly, although I will say that a lot of folks went to a 5D after the 40D and have expressed real happiness.

Take a look at the 5D Classic Admirers' thread, and then ask folks there for feedback about this, and be prepered:)!:

https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=996038

I will say, though, that I personally would not be quick to dump the 40D even if you are thrilled with the 5D. I shot with the 30D and decided to go with the 5D and, for general shooting the 5D was (and is) my body of choice.

But the 5D is not the "best for everything". For things such as bird/wildlife shooting and macros of little things a crop body does deliver "more pixels on-target", and that remained a consideration of mine. In fact, I added the 1DMk3 to my gear because I wanted both that and the high-perfomance of the 1D3, but still never gave up the 30D, in fact, I've recently used it for "bug" macros with good results and, for a time when the 5DC had to go in to fix the famous "mirror fall-off" the 30D became my walk-aroud lens!

But the question you were answering was not whether it was a better camera for him ;)

The answer is still yes.

If the question was which is a better camera in general then the 40D would most likely still win, all the 5D has going for it is the larger sensor offering a wider field of view and slightly better noise performance, if they're not needed then the 40D has a ton of advantages.

The 17-40 will shine on the 5d compared to the 40d, I find my self shooting with that combination the majority of the time.

If you are after better IQ, ISO performance, and added width, the 5d would be an amazing choice. But if the higher frame rate and added reach with your telephoto is important, then you might want to look else where.
