I currently have a 100-400mm L and am pretty happy with the lens. I mainly use it for shooting surfing (when it's big otherwise I'd rather be surfing) or when going to the zoo with the family. The only reason I'm thinking about selling is to use the funds to buy a 300mm f4 non IS (it's always on a tripod) and using the difference for some strobe gear.

I have a Kenko 1.4X telecon which I would use with the 300mm but wondering if anyone had experience with a 2X telecon (f8, right?) and should autofocus with a 1D, right?

Anyone ever migrate from 100-400mm to a 300mm prime?

Me? I wouldn't do it. But that's me and I don't have a need for strobes. Your needs may be different. I guess the question to be answered is, where is it more important to put your money?

i've owned both lenses. the 300 is okay with 1.4 tc. you'll get crap with 2x tc. stick with the 100-400.

effstop - I would not have done it if I wasn't in an acute need of funds. Infact went with the 400 prime because I could not justify the spending on the much pricier 100-400. But since you are more or less implying that you use it like a 400 prime (mostly on a tripod on the longer end), it makes sense to me. I am myself researching about TC's now-a-days, people caution me about focus hunting / inability to focus due to lack of enough contrast, which may be the case many times in your particular application. No chance of renting a 300 and trying out your TC with it before making the switch?

You pretty much always get a better image with native focal length rather than throwing extra glass in the pipeline (TC) to extend a shorter lens. I'd keep the 100-400, honestly

Besides...are you trying to branch to another type of shooting with this move? From your description of what you're shooting, strobe gear isn't going to help there much...
