This one ended okay...if you head out alone, be sure to let someone know where you're going.

Carry a GPS unit with the satellite transmitter that attachs to your smart phone so you can text your location and brief text in an emergency. And strongly consider Medjet Assist. http://medjetassist.com/ (external link)

I believe there have been quite a few incidents out there since the Ralston incident. I carry a Spot when out in the field, hiking or 4wheelin'. I saw that ACR now has a personal 406 Epirb that is not a subscription service, haven't read up on it, yet.

I've often solo hiked in the wilderness, but usually let someone know my general area. Saw the movie "127 Hours" and bought a GPS. Now to learn to use more than just the trackback feature! What are these acr eperb things that people are referring to?

6D, G9, Sigma 50 1.4, Sigma 15mm Fisheye, Sigma 50 2.8 macro, Nikon 14-24G 2.8, Canon 16-35 2.8 II, Canon 24-105 f/4 IS, Canon 70-200 2.8 IS, tripod, lights, other stuff.

The one I have is the TerraFix 406 made by ACR the are hand held personal locator becons. they broadcaston the COSPAS-SARSAT satellite system, the location is picked up be a monitering system that will activate a search and rescue for your location. The coverage is world wide. There are some models that will lit you send pre-programed messages to some email accounts of cell numbers although these require a membership fee.
