There is nothing out there in that focal range with image stabilization.

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

Great IQ and affordable price tend to be mutually exclusive but here are a few to consider.
18-55IS - doesn't have f/2.8 but for the price the IQ is surprising.
55-250IS - same as above and covers the long.
24-105IS - Only F4 but very good IQ. Costs more though.
17-55IS - Optically superb. Constant f/2.8. Costs more.
15-85IS - Optically superb. No 2.8 but much more affordable.
18-135IS - Not sure optically but affordable.

There are other manufacturers but I will leave that to others as I tend to stay away from them. (bad experience)

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

I think the Sigma 17-70 would be a good choice. It's cheaper than the 17-50 (which is an "EX" higher-grade lens), but it is very sharp and the IS is very effective.

17-70 OS would fit the bill, focuses closer than most non-macro so great for closeup, and wider + longer than the 17-50's so as a lens for "about everything" its hard to beat.

Some shots to show its versatility:

Not sure about your copy of Tamron 28-75 f2.8 but mine produces great image quality. I realized this when i got a EF 24-105 f4L and compared the two. Almost have no difference in Sharpness. The L produces slightly, just slightly better colors. Both handle CA well. Do I like the IS more or the large aperture f2.8? I found f2.8 gives me more advantage for what i am shooting. I guess that means my 24-105 f4 IS won't be in my possession long. :p

I would have to agree with this. I moved form a Tammy 28-75 to a Canon 24-105 f4 L IS. Both of these worked on my 7D and a few weeks back I sold the 24-105 and got a Canon 17-55 f2.8 IS. Like the above poster, I missed the f2.8 more than I needed the IS..... now I have both :)

I have not had any problems with the 17-70's focusing. I will admit that I do not like the fact that the focus ring turns when you use AF - you have to be careful not to touch the ring while the camera is focusing. Also, I do wish that it had full-time manual focus, the way my Tamron 70-300, Canon 60, and Canon 400 do. However, I still like the lens a lot and would recommend it. I LOVE its close-focusing ability, mentioned by Sirrith.
