I purchased a 100mm macro from a user here, quick easy, great...

just came in. the appearance seems fine in & out, but the focus ring has a bit of play/wiggle...

concern?

Just tested & AF seems to be fine.

I don't actually have mine with me so I can't check, but I think that is normal.

What it does is the ring wiggled not the way it rotates but from end to end, front of lens to back of lens, little wiggle/play...

It just came in the mail today, elements look crystal clear, but the wiggle concerns me....

hmmm.. i think that's a little normal, but not sure.. as long the element looks great, you're great to go outside to start taking stills. :D

which one is it? L or non-L. As I said, my L version doesn't have any play like you describe. My non-L is down the street with a neighbor, so I can't check it right now.

I'm assuming we're talking about the 100/2.8 USM model (not the earlier non-USM model or the newer L/IS model)...

I pulled out my 100/2.8 USM and checked... There is a very slight wink of play in the focus ring, front to rear... It's more like just enough to see slight movement than feel it at all. I'd never noticed it before. Other lenses I've got have "looser" focus rings and still work just fine. I'd suggest you get out and shoot with the lens to evaluate it better, if it's working correctly. But I doubt it's a problem.
