Outdoor Portraits C&C

I'm venturing from landscape and wildlife photography into portraits and would like some critique for these two photographs. The one of the gal is with on-camera flash, and the one of the guy is off-camera flash. Both were taken using the 70-200 f2.5L lens with a Canon 50D.

I don't ever use flash so I can't rally give you any recommendations or critiques on that part :/, that being said there something about the color in #1 that I don't like I'm not sure if it's lacking contrast or what maybe someone else can help me out on that part... #2 she has the deer in head lights look, i would make the light a bit softer and more flattering for her. Keep it up!

you can pick up knock offs at most camera stores or buy direct
the are a cheap flash modifier that softens the light and works really well for the $$

I appreciate the comments. I know it's going to take practice to improve, so I'll continue taking every opportunity to photograph people! Also, I have a Gary Fong diffuser, but I didn't have it with me the day I took these shots. I'll have to bring it with me next time.
