My wife is expecting and is due on January 18th... I'm planning on doing the newborn pics myself, and I'm trying to get an early jump on preparing for this.
The gear I have at my disposal now is as follows:
7D
580EX
EF-S 10-22mm, EF-S 17-55mm 2.8 IS, EF 24-105mm F4L, EF 50mm 1.4, EF 70-200mm 2.8L IS
Tripod w/ ballhead
I'm planning to pick up 2 PCB Einstein 640s, a couple 51" PLMs and a 24x30 softbox, cybersyncs and a cyber commander sometime next month and trying to learn how to use them by the time baby comes... But as a fall back I can always just use my 580EX bounced off the ceiling :P. Hopefully I can figure it out, and can do some pregnancy shots with my wife too...
My wife and I are planning to get some knit/crocheted hats and stuff from etsy.com or locally, and I'm trying to find a decent bean bag and some nice blankets.
Also looking for a decent space warmer (is this necessary?, it stays pretty warm here in Hawaii all year long), and white noise machine...
My wife has found a bunch of websites with newborn photos, so i've been checking out all different poses and what not, and have an idea of what I want to try to do...
I think I have most of the logistics down on what I need, and what I need to do by the time baby comes... What concerns me is the technical side of things.. i.e. figuring out the lighting, and techniques behind shooting with the studio lights... I've done some portrait work with my 580EX but that was with adults and using smaller apertures to get more DOF... A lot of the examples I've seen are shot with very shallow DOF... meaning I'll have to dial my lights way down or use a ND filter... might be overthinking this a bit :P
I usually use my 24-105 at 50-70mm for 3/4 portraits... but I think my 70-200mm may be necessary to get those really tight shots... for those who do this kinda of stuff, is that what you would recommend? (the room I'm going to be shooting in is ~12'x20' w/ 8' ceilings...
Anything I missed, or any suggestions would be greatly appreciated... thanks!
