According to a friend of mine who's stationed there, the San Diego Tribune is probably looking for a new photo editor since today's edition trumpeted the upcoming Miramar airshow with a full-color, half-page image of:

Instead of:

Whoops...!

Has anyone noticed that the Blues fly in a tighter formation than the Birds? Just an observation.

I distinctly remember a time when the TBirds flew a tighter show than they do today. I'm not sure exactly when they changed their spacing but they definitely kicked it out a bit at some point.

The Blues have always flown tighter than the 'Birds though.

Say, is that last plane in line there a "two seater" or my eyes deceiving me? The cockpit area looks a little different than the other three...

(Sorry, but I don't know much about these aircraft) :o

Yes. Blue Angel 7 is a 2-seater F-18, while I believe 1-6 are all single-seater.

That was shot during winter "training camp" at NAF El Centro and they were using the jet that's usually Blue Angel #7 in the slot position that is normally occupied by the #4 jet. All 6 demo jets are normally single-seat F/A-18 Hornets.

Has anyone else noted an increasing amount of crashes at airshows all over the states both in current acft and antiques? You could not pay me enough to be anyplace near one till they get a handle on what is causing all of the incidents.

2011 has been a very difficult year but there's no reason to be afraid of the airshow environment.

In 1986, a passenger jetliner & a small aircraft collided midair over the City of Cerritos (where I lived) and crashed into a few homes less than a block away from our house.

http://en.wikipedia.org …erom%C3%A9xico_Flight_498 (external link)

That experience taught me that sh!t happens and it's completely out of your control. My entire family was home that day. Just as much as that plane landed a block away, it could have easily landed on top of my house and wipe out my family in an instant. But it didn't.

In short, you're never safe from harm. You might as well dig a hole in the ground. And even doing so, a sudden heavy down pour could cause a flash flood and drown you. Or an earthquake could hit and cause a cave-in and kill you.

But you want to steer away from airshows? That's fine. One less person to contend with with regards to parking and viewing space. ;)

The '86 Cerritos accident ranks almost as high as the two airliners that collided over the Grand Canyon in terms of changes to air traffic control.

That was a good commentary on the air races, but he lost me when he went all political and started talking ideology...
