Has anyone sold their 24-105 for a 24-70 and ended up regretting it?

May sound like a silly question, but I was just wondered if anyone's been in my position - basically, I dont use my 24-105 anymore, mainly because it's f4, and I also because i have a 70-200 which I tend to use for reach. As a result my 24-105 has been doing nothing for about 6 months.

So, other that the reach, and weight, are there any negatives to the 24-70?

Cheers!

I don't think I would ever buy a lens that is F4 anyway, but I've heard many good things about the 24-105. The 24-70s that I've used aren't so sharp at 2.8, but I'd still choose it over the 105. The 2.8 really seals the deal.

There is a good comparison on Luminous Landscape:

I don't regret buying the 24-70 at all. I did miss the long end of the 24-105 until I picked up a 100 IS.

You can always repurchase the same lens. I don't see the need for angst when selling gear.

Went 24-105 to 28-70. The 105 makes for a good walkaround, but I have enjoyed my 28-70 and would do the same over.

I tried the 24-70 .... but found the 2.8 really wasn't needed.

Saved a few buck and went with the 24-105, imo being f/4 doesn't do it any harm at all.

f/2.8 could mean a shutter of 1/80 vs 1/40 at f/4...if you need faster shutter speeds, IS won't do it for you. I prefer the versatility of the 24-105 focal package and IS, myself. If you're not using it, though, I'd consider what your shooting style IS in the 24-70 focal ranges and maybe consider a couple, fast primes for the occasions that you shoot that wide...might be able to cheaper than a 24-70 if you just aren't shooting much in that range.

I just got the 24-70L after testing both lenses, the 24-105 seemed to have a lot of fringing in certain conditions and I prefer the bokeh on the 24-70L. IS would have been nice though

had a 24-70, sold it, and picked up a sharp sharp copy of 24-105, suits my needs better than the 24-70, longer FL, IS, i dont mind f4 since i use it mainly in bright light......

very happy...

My slowest lens is the 17-40L (f/4) it'll be replaced soon with a 16-35L mk2 simply because when faster shutter is needed the f/4 lens is slower.

As far as the 24-70L is concerned its a workhorse for events photography for me. Bokeh is creamy and pleasant but its NEEDS a revision bigtime!!! the 24-70L needs have more contrast and sharpness like the newer Canon mK2 version lenses.

Even though I have a 24-70L I'm tempted to buy a 24-105L for more reach for good light situations.

My 24-70L is extremely sharp but I'm not blown away by the performance. I'll use it at f/4 to "play it safe" in landing the shot while achieving nice bokeh. As I said its a workhorse for events.

Ultimately I'm generally happy with faster glass...period. So I guess the fact that its f/2.8 this is the main reason I own it. Everyone has a reason in their decisions for their application.

I use primes majority of the time anyways LOL!!! When I need to capture moments I dont hesitate using the "brick"

I purchased the 24-105L as my first "L" lens on a crop body, thinking I'll be happy and willing to shoot at slower speeds if IS can manage to curtail shake.

However, I found that the bokeh (if any) wasn't all that pleasing until the distance from subject to background was rather extreme.

Seven days later, I got my 24-70L. I do miss how much sharper and crisper images from the 24-105 were, but the overall satisfaction of using the 24-70 on my 5DII makes me very very happy. I'll have to try a 24-105 soon on full frame.

Cheers for your thoughts guys and gals!

Iv been thinking a lot about this today and I might have changed my mind ... well, I'm on the fence as to what's the best thing todo...

Basically for about the same cost I'm options are...

24-70l
35l
24l

I'm a fan of primes, owning the 50mm and 85mm and they are my most used lenses. So just need to have a good think I think :)
