It would appear someone has been trying to hack into my POTN account about half an hour ago or so (IP address comes up as based in Switzerland).

Has anyone else had this recently?

It's a VPS server robot in Monzoon Networks AG's SwissVPN client pool. I have now firewalled 80.254.76.128/25 to prevent any more attempts by that robot.

Anyone can try to log in with your name and after 5 failed logins system blocks the attempts (to prevent brute force robots) and sends that warning mail to account owner. The mail actually tells you the attempt did not succeed.

THIS IS VITAL: MAKE SURE YOU PASSWORD IS NOT A WORD YOU CAN GUESS, SAME AS YOUR USERNAME, OR A WORD YOU CAN FIND IN ANY DICTIONARY.

Thanks guys. Yeah I know it didn't get in and wouldn't have much chance of stumbling on my password, but was curious as to how widespread attempts were. Cheers.

I may be a bit naive but why would someone want to hack a member account on a forum thats free to join? I am not doubting that it happens, just thinking... why?

Just further proof I wouldn't make a good criminal or whatever they are called.

In my business I own a full lock pick set and various other tools designed to open locked cars and in the past 20 years I have been able to successfully open two cars. Good thing I don't lock the keys in my customers cars too often. :p

Slim jims work better in a lot of cases. Good on the admins for catching these bot hacks. I've been noticing a few spam posts and I have been reporting them as soon as I see them.
