Good morning.

Let me start by saying I am am amatuer who gets an occasional paying gig. Recently I was asked by an aquaintence to shoot a cheerleader competition/exhibit as their regular pro was unavailable. I was told his set up was some monitors to view pics of the event but a purchaser would have to fill out an order form and items would be mailed.

What all would be entailed in setting up at an event like this? Are shots usually edited all all for the displays?
I am going to set up a smugmug or zenfolio account.

Thx-Randy

Randy

Randy,
Have you tried the search button? There is alot of info here regarding this very subject. This can get expensive very fast, I can tell you that. If you dont capture the sell at the event you will loose sells. Do you know why the previous pro is unavalibe? How big of an event is this? will it be well lighted? What is your experince with shooting cheer?
As far as your question about setting up this event it depends on how much you want to invest I would only edit shots that sell myself when it comes to cheer as you need to get them uploaded asap, and you will be a very old man if you try to edit them all prior to uploading exspecialy depending on how big this event is.
I know cheer is huge down your way, and I actually have worked for a company that provides images for the NCA/NDA nationals the last two years.
I am not trying to dampen your hopes, but taking the shots and posting them up for sale on your site is not the best approch if your hopeing to make $$$.
Do you have any more specific questions that we can help you with?

Randy, the questions/advice Jeff offers here is spot on. I too won't try to discourage you from doing this, but there is so much more than just putting up some monitors for people to view on. How much time do you have to get ready for this event? You will need event viewing software and someone working the table how can trouble shoot any problems that come up (and they will....). You need a way to take payments. You need insurance. Are you prepared to market yourself? Lets hope you have good lighting.

If you can't secure the sale before the parents leave, you will likely never see that sale again. With this being the beginning of the cheer season, there is likely going to be another competition just around the corner and once the parents get there, they forget about the pics from the last event....

If this is a decent sized event, you will have a few thousand images at a minimum, so editing onsite is out of the question. You have to get the exposure right in the camera so that you have minimum editing for any ordered images. When Jeff says it can get expensive quick, I think thats an understatement. I am very small when it comes to this game, and I spent ~5K just to get started, and thats only the viewing station equipment!

If you are not familiar with all-star cheer, be ready because these girls can move!

There is a ton of info, but I have a tendency to ramble on, so I'll stop here...

Good Luck, Lance.
