So i hope this is the right section-

I just acquired a 420EX and when i was playing with it earlier i noticed that when i went into the menu and checked out the c.fn it would say that the flash was either off or not attached....which it was....and on.....lol.

It was set on flash...not slave....

and on the green dot....not HSS....

i had a pilot light and the flash does work....as i have test shots in a separate thread...

did i miss something?

I ran through the user manual but i did not see anything for this issue....just what c.fn actually exist....

any ideas?

The 420ex doesn't have custom functions. It is a good flash but is more for automatic e-TTL metering. You can also use it with high speed sync and second curtain sync but it doesn't have many other features.

Do you mean the camera's Flash Control Menus? The 420EX is not able to be controlled that way.

The 420EX predates the in-camera menu interface, but it does have some items available in the camera flash menu.
(same for other older flashes like the 430EX, 550EX, 580EX, and some 3rd party)

In the "External flash func. setting" menu, you will see some items available, and some "Grayed Out" :

Main Flash Menu: Only ETTL II available

Shutter sync: 1st and 2nd curtain (HSS must be selected on flash body)

ETTL: Evaluative or Average

No Custom Functions available (420EX has no Custom Functions) (the 430EX and 550EX both have CF, so I wonder what they would display?)
