First attempt at portraits.

IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: NOT FOUND | MIME changed to 'image/gif' | Redirected to error image by FLICKR



This was when I first got my t2i, shot with a 50mm f/1.4... Set the camera to monochrome and went for it... No post processing.

Opinions... Suggestions?

Opinion: the hand/cup is distracting.
Suggestion: Never shoot in monochrome. Always do that in PP.

Looking more at this image, his ears got a little soft... cause I was wide open at 1.4 doing the trendy hipster thing with my 50 when I got it. UGH

It's ok at best. The cup out of focus is not working for me.

I agree that the blurry white cup and hand are a distraction. Also, I find the small oval patch of light on the chin a distraction as well. Facial expression is nice however, and you do seem to have captured good detail in the shadows.
