If you have a low contrast scene try vivid light to kick some juice into the image. I rarely use soft light.

Hi Tony:

Sorry so late responding to your question. The simple process was duplicate layer, set to high-pass, choose soft light, blend at around 50-60%. Flatten layers then added a touch of USM. Really simple.

dave

Sorry to be a pain but this set of instructions are different from the first set you posted. I'm still not seeing much difference so I must be really messing up somewhere along the way.

Set to Overlay. Use the blends Overlay, Hard Light or Linear Light, along with adjusting the opacity to determine how much "sharpening" looks right for you ...

This is a better tut for it..

Thanks that helped.

The pixel size must match the resolution of the image in order for the mask to be seen. So for instance if you have 5DII file at full resolution typically you want the run the high pass filter at 3 pixels or so. For online images .5 pixels will work. Even if you over sharpen in the mask you can use opacity to blend the output and sometimes I will over sharpen and then blend rather than not have enough information in the mask to create a sharpened effect.

Thanks
