I've been online since 1987 but a few minutes ago I think I browsed to the final webpage on the Internet. Cruising through Craiglist a few minutes ago I came across this gem: For Sale (external link)

It could be a prank since a phone number is listed but I have to wonder....

Hey, a youngun!

Actually, the Internet began as a Department of Defense project in the '60s, then was released to colleges/univerities, so into the '80s had made it into major companies.

The Web got developed in Switzerland, I believe, as a college project. It wasn't until the early '90s that it began popping up over the Internet, at least in any "common" sense.

Windows had not adopted the Internet at the time, although they got up-to-speed, at least by the mid-'90s if I remember correctly.

The Internet has been around for decades: History of the Internet (external link)

However, it wasn't until the introduction of the Web browser in 1991 that it really became popular. I became a member of Compuserve in 1987; my account number started with 71234 so you'd know I was one of the really early members.

Back in those days the Internet consisted mostly of bulletin boards and Usenet and Internet Relay Chat for the geeks. If I remember correctly modems ran at around 1200 bps and you were billed by the length of your connection to Compuserve and the speed of the connection. So to save money people would set the modem to really slow speeds.

This was even before AOL existed; I remember companies like Compuserve and Genie providing connections to the internet. I bought an IBM PS/2 computer and it came with coupons for signing up with Compuserve and Genie. When AOL came along in the early '90s we looked down on their users.

Back then buying a PC was like buying a car. You went to a dealer, ordered the computer and it took a day or so for them to configure it with DOS before you picked it up. That PS/2 cost me about $4K so since then I've built my own computers.

Now we all know the dirty little secret behind the phrase "Drop The Chalupa!"

They didn't want people finding the end of the internet so now you're marked man who will forever be hunted by a small but highly-trained special ops team from Liechtenstein tasked with silencing those who've seen "that which should not have been seen."

I'd lay low for a while if I were you...

Go for it if you're hungry. A second or third nuking won't hurt it . . .

This.

And I once saw someone selling used children's underwear on ebay. They had been washed and all but I thought it weird and I wouldn't have dreamed of buying them for my kids.

Well, now that you've seen it all, you have an opportunity to do something else.

Like go outside and discover the real world.
