Sandisk Ultra 16GB images corruption

Anyone else is having problem with this CF card? I bought 2 a few months ago and never did use them more than 8GB or so. Then I started filling them up and random images showed up corrupted in one of them.

I talked to Sandisk and RMA'ed that one and while it's enrouted back to me, the second failed the same way. I shot about 3-400 shots of a soccer game and 2-3 of them showed up corrupted. I then formatted, shot another few hundreds and a few more were corrupted. They were all random too and didn't seem to be at any particular sector.

This happened on both my 1Ds MKII and 1D MKIII. I sent in the second card as well.

I talked to a friend who bought the exact same card roughly the same time I did (from Adorama), and he also had corrupted image from his 5D MKII...

Freaking weird.

I checked and the batteries wasn't low and I have no issue with the same card in 8GB as well as Lexar 16 and 8GB cards...just this 16Gb CF Ultra Sandisk.

Could have been a bad batch of chips or cards. Happened to SanDisk at least once before; they replaced the defective cards and eventually recalled the whole lot once the pattern became clear. That said, I've seen something less than 1% failure rate on SanDisk cards (since they were SunDisk and came in PCMCIA card sizes).

Yeah Jon, that was what I figured, bad batch of chip of some sort. It was so coincidence with 3 cards had the same issue at the same time.

Hopefully the ones they sent back are better, but I haven't shoot with it much.

I once had a memory card reader that would give me roughly .5% corrupted files... all files would show up fine on camera LCD, but the transfer would give me a couple corrupts... when I tried another reader, all was fine... that same reader and another brand card didn't seem to have any issues...

also, someone will ask eventually.. you buy those Sandisk cards from a reputable vendor? Lots of fake Sandisk cards floating around

It was not the reader as I have 2 and tried both. The corrupted images could be seen directly on the card as well.

The cards were bought from Adorama and I hope they weren't fake.

Yup same card. Sandisk will replace but it takes about 2 weeks. They use ground UPS shipping both ways - 10 days or more in transit.

I know they are not Helen...just really bad luck with them

I had two 16GB Sandisk Extreme cards corrupt on me on a recent trip to Kenya, Luckily I was able to retrieve most of the files (100 on one card and 600 on the other).
Amazon have refunded both cards.

It may not have anything to do directly with the topic, but why 16gb anyway? From everything I've read, it usually makes more sense to go with several 4gb or 8gb cards so that if one crashes, you don't lose everything you've shot. Also, I recently read that larger capacity cards actually use more battery juice. It's so easy to swap out cards that it seems to make more sense to me to just go with multiple 4gb or 8gb cards and call it good.

I seem to remember my first digital P&S coming with a 16mb card. That's one image from my T1i.

I purchased a few Sandisk Extreme 16gb 60mb/s cards from adorama 3 weeks ago today I had four go down during a sports shoot.

I was using 2 ID Mk III's and all four cards failed approximately when they were 1/2 to 2/3rds full on two separate bodies.

Unbelievable I pray I can recover these files...

Just got off the phone with Sandisk a few minutes ago, apparently they won't admit to any issues with cf cards and were less than helpful with the issue. I was told "to buy" the newer version of recovery pro and try running that again, even thou the cards come with a one year subscription.

I told the representative that I would contact everyone I could regarding the lack of support by Sandisk and my twitter blogs etc would also have this recorded.

I thanked him and wished him a good night and hung up.

3 minutes later the phone rang, the same gentleman now was very helpful and provided me with the information on the new recovery pro activation code.

I'm running it and it looks like I may be able to salvage part of the job...

Keep you guys updated, as I'm gonna test shoot the other 2 cards in the morning.

btw the serial numbers are consecutive so it does appear to be a bad batch...

I just ran recovery pro on the first card, it found no files.

Starting to get really worried here...
