kinda aiming for that thoughtful approach in the shot I guess...posted this in the photoblog yesterday, just a random frame from sitting on the edge of the endzone photographing practice

8's, I like it, but it's not quite working for me. I'd like it to be more of a sillouette (maybe just making it b&w ?) and the tilt of the goal posts bugs me a bit...

I like the concept, but the shot doesn't have the drama.... can't put my finger on what exactly it is. I think part my be the utility poll. Play with the curves too... it might pop... who knows.

I like the idea. Just wondering since I don't have alot of experience, would it have worked to have entire scene in focus. It seems the silloutte of the player will make it stand out, but the blurred backround is distracting a little to me.

If it was all in focus your eyes would go all over (they'd look at the posts, the trees all the other stuff in the background.) When everything's blurred around a subject your eyes snap to what's in focus.

The concept is just fine.

Something makes me think that it would have been a better shot from a slightly different angle where the posts are further to the right in the frame... or perhaps from a lower angle, so that you could see all of the posts including the crossbar....

If you did the low angle.... would you go really wide to get more of the total environment too - make the boy a larger presence in the image... just curious how you would do it different.

8's I think you were on to something, but the image is trying to be two things. For the silloutte shot there is too much light. Had you moved to your right and got the sun behind the player, you may have found the shot you were looking for.

However for me the shot is the player looking up field with the sun reflecting off his back. Message is - end of the game - another good day on the field - the joy of a job well done. The folded arms suggests a review of a job well done.

I trust you won't object, but I played with the levels a bit and added a touch of soft focus to the background.

nah, play with it all you want...the thing is that being photojournalism school, if we altered an image that much, we'd get our asses whooped...lol

A bunch of us were having that very discussion at a race meeting last weekend (in between the rain and oh boy did it rain 800 ISO to get an images)

Is the art to get the photo without any tweaking or are you collecting raw material - Don't ask me ... I have no isea.

I do like the re-edit, it softens the background and refocuses you on the subject....

Blinking8s, so let me ask you this, if you are doing a documentary shot, and using film, are you not allowed to use any photo filters like polarizer, gradient, color, warming, star, etc? If you are, are you not allowed to apply those same filters digitally to digital images? Were not talking changing content.... just wondering what they are teaching you all.
