I have been looking at all the lens post and pictures and I am even more confused which one to get now. Please help!

ok, I have a Canon 40D and I shoot mostly pets, children and an senior portrait every now and then. Mostly pets. I have a Canon 50 1.8 and a canon 55-250 and a tamron 17 50 . I am still looking for another lens. I have been thinking about the 24-70 or the tamron 28-70. Also the canon 85 1.8 and after all the reading I decided to just come and ask for myself. Love to see examples.

Teeny:)

there should be ample examples of any lens you're considering in the "Lens Sample Photo Archive".

You can find Canon 24-105mm f/4L for a very reasonable price on P.O.T.N. Very sharp and good lens. Image Stabilizer is a plus.

What's lacking with the lenses you have now?

Seriously, only once you answer that question can you say what new lens you might need.

70-200 f2.8 is a great portrait lens, if you can afford it.

Exactly.
If you have decided you want a faster lens, then the prime is what you should get.
The Tam 28-75 will give you more reach with great glass but still at 2.8 (just like your 17-50). I would go off the beaten path just a bit and not only say the 85mm but suggest the Tamron 60mm. Very sharp lens that will give you an added macro ability you may not have in your arsenal now :)

Amfoto and bickr are exactly right. Only shop for a lens when you have a specific need that your current gear can't meet.

I hope OP doesn't mind, but like Adrian Monk, (a bit less so I hope), I'm a bit obsessive compulsive....

Value IMO you should look into a 85 1.8
Unexpensive. Super sharp, great bokeh, super nice for portraits, fast focus for pets, you already have the 17-50 2.8. This lens will complement nicely without breaking the bank.

Thanks Kitacanon for removing the lines. That looks so much better, but I just am not good at it. (I love Monk)! Thanks for everyone's help. I looked at I think it was a 60 or 65 yesterday at the local camera store, they did not have the 85. So do yall think the 85 is better than the 60 version?

It's really easy to do, go and get Photoshop elements for $99 (if you don't have Photoshop), it has a few tools for getting rid of things like that and they work easily and excellently.
