A job well done. I always have issues with volleyball.

Nice job. I know how hard ambient VB can be.

I like #4. But they looks a little yellow/redish. I tried a quick eye dropper select...

Wow- You've done an incredible job of capturing detail under the ambient light- Quite a feat. Your timing is great also, although- we've come to expect that of you.....

A couple overexposed a little perhaps? # 8 for example- the ball, the blocker's face.... all seem to be a tad too much.

White balance is nearly impossible to get right in these gyms- the cycling lights can make for 6 different colors of light on one frame. #4 looks maybe a little green? I usually look at the blonde girls' hair for that- Other than skin tones, if the WB is off, that is usually where I can see it.

Great stuff, as always! I'm curious though- why no lights this time?

I haven't used the strobes for volleyball yet this year. Last year, I never shot it without strobs. Our new home gym has good lightling so I haven't needed it there.

At this venue, the light isn't nearly as good. It has very limited seating (only on one end of the court) and no balcony or stairs. It was a 5pm game so the best I could do is get there a bit late (no time to set up strobes) and fire away. These pics for a newspaper so the IQ demands aren't as high. Player 23 always has a red face (especially cheeks) when she is active and here I toned it down in Lightroom with the adjustment brush. I may have caused more problems than I cured.

Clarence, Thanks. I'm out of state (Eau Claire, WI) and don't have a decent monitor to check colors but it looks like your edit is in the right direction. I'll give it a closer look when I get back home and can view with a proper monitor.

I have a few of those "pink" players too... frustrating to get their skin tones right.

It ain't the Mk IV, it's Phil.
Is #6 your daughter, or just a beast, or both?

Very nice set of photos! I used to play a LOT of volleyball, indoor and beach, and I've just started this sport. Sometimes it helps me prepare for some plays, but other times my past hinders my shooting because I'm fighting the urge to jump and hit when I see a nice shoot across the net. Arrghh!!!!

Thanks.

Although my daughter is a beast (at times) and plays on the team, she is #9 in other photos of the team. Number 6 pictured here is arguably the best high school volleyball player in Kansas. First team all state as a sophomore and junior (now a senior), she signed before the start of her junior year to play for a top D1 volleyball program. She is 6'1" tall, has huge ups, terrific young lady, and could model if she wasn't into volleyball.

Manlou,

Most of my volleyball shooting is at 1/1000sec. After 3 years of shooting the sport and reading Big K's tutorial (more than once) and reviewing my photos of earlier years, I'm getting to the point where I instinctively know what shot I can get from what location(s) with what lens. It's still the toughest sport for me to shoot because of the challenges of light quality, light quantity, court access, the need to often focus through the net, low light focus, fast action, etc. etc.

But, it's fun.

It appears you are elevated in some of these. Is that so? I have seriously been thinking about bringing a 3 foot ladder/stool to shoot volleyball. Really great shots!

You should definitely try some shots from the bleachers if you have them at the venue you shoot at. Being able to get the player hitting/blocking with a nice backdrop of fans makes for a nice picture. Even if it's just empty seats you can get a clean background with a closer crop.
