... would the 28-70mm L be a better buy than the newer 24-70mm L?

I've been reading threads and online reviews, and aside from weather sealing and an extra 4mm, its a toss up regarding IQ between these two lenses.

I'm going to buy a 5D pretty soon and would love a 24/28-70 standard zoom, but the 24-70mm is considerably more expensive here in Japan (even used).

If anyone has experience with both, can you tell me if the 24-70mm is worth the extra money? I read that the 24-70mm has "more" copy variations.

Would Canon still service the 28-70?

I'm a serious hobbyist that likes to shoot candids, studio portraits, and just general photography fun.

4mm alone is reason enough to buy the 24-70L even if the lenses are equal in performance. i'm pretty sure canon does not service the 28-70.

if your 28-70L breaks, it's a $700 paperweight. at least the 24-70 has service potential. What specifically do you need the f/2.8 for? The 24-105L has IS and is just as sharp. f/4 still gives decent bokeh on a 5D

^^^ Thanks Weston for the advice. So I take it that the 28-70mm is no longer being serviced. If so, then that'll make the choice obvious.

Sometimes I feel like I have mood swings: I'll be dead set on the 24-70mm, and a few days later I'll change my mind and think about the 24-105mm.

I've been reading a lot of threads regarding the two and have yet to make up my mind. I thought the 28-70mm would be a nice compromise.

It's true that Canon won't service it, but there are non Canon camera repair shops that will.

I love my 24-105. On my 5D MK II its wide enough in most occasions and has the reach I want for a walk about lens.

I had mine serviced a while back, but I was lucky, I managed to get the last USM in the country. I would probably go for the 24-70.....although I hardly use my 28-70 at all. It's a 'just in case' lens.
