how wide do you really need? and will you miss the long end? the 24-105 is pretty good lens the 17-40mm is sharper in the center but not in the corners. the vignetting was more on the 24-105mm whi

I love my 24-105L on a full frame. Its the perfect walkround lens. I would also like to own the 17-40L because unlike my 10-22, it will fit my EOS 3 and my 7D.

I have both and use both on my 5D. They are different creatures but each has their strong advantages. As Vendee says it is the perfect walkaround on my 5D as well as great for the wedding work I do. The 17-40 can give great low angle landscape and architectural shots.

totally worthless thread. Why comparing 2 different lens for different purposes?

We are not mind readers and we don't know what you shoot, so how can anyone give you any constructive advice???

My opinion? Get both. One is an UWA and the other general walkaround.

Paintball - Is the 24-105 your only lens? If so, I'd wait until you can afford 17-40 + 50mm 1.8 + 70-200 f4.

That is the perfect combo in my opinion, but will require a lot of lens changes.

The 17-40 is truly an amazing lens if you know how to shoot wide. Here's a shot from back when I had this on the 5D...

17-40 is more useful if you mainly shoot landscape. But still, i will never sell a general walkaround to fund another lens.

Just save up, 17-40 is one of the cheapest L....you will miss the useful focal length of the 24-105 if you sell it.

They both server two different purposes. If it was me, I would trade the 24-104/4L in for a 24-70/2.8 instead. The 17-40 is mainly for landscape anyways so you won't be shooting wide open most of the time. The 24-70 is a great walk-around lens if you don't mind the extra weight, and it performs exceptionally well in low light. That's just my two cents if you want it.

Since part of the discussion is the 17-40, I was talking to a lady that has one. She mentioned that when the lens is at 17 or 40, I can't remember which one, the hood will interfear and be in the image? Anybody else have that problem?
