Since part of the discussion is the 17-40, I was talking to a lady that has one. She mentioned that when the lens is at 17 or 40, I can't remember which one, the hood will interfear and be in the image? Anybody else have that problem?

She probably doesn't have the lens hood on properly. The lens hood is designed to be used without any interference problems.

Very likely this is the case. If you accidentally bump it there may be some interference, but attached correctly this will not happen. There is also the possibility that she's using the wrong Canon hood on her 17-40. Something designed for 40mm+ will clip the corners.
