Hi, any idea what the .THM file is for? I see this file accompanying every .MOV file. Thanks

Pretty sure that's a thumbnail file extension.

What's its function? I could run a .MOV file with the .THM file deleted

I believe is like a EXIF sidecar file for each movie file.

I think so. Is there any way to read the file?

I think all there is to see of it is what shows up in the file browser for the video file. The two work hand in hand and as I understand it the info from the .thm file is pulled into the video file upon viewing or if nothing else just when the thumbnail image of the video file is seen. I know they arent needed as I almost always have deleted them. They may actually be JUST the JPEG image preview for the video file...

Keeping in mind that I am on a mac, if you take that thumbnail file and drag it to your desktop, change the extension to .jpg, you can then right click on the file and get all the .exif data.

Works great. Other than that, I always throw this file away. I shoot vid with the T2i.

Thanks Lonnie, I tried your method in win7 and it worked as well. I can view the full exif now.

In canon's software you can read all the exif data. Zoom browser. I think if you delete it then you will not be able to know which lens you used for a particular clip?

I imagine thats how it would work as thats generall standard for sidecar file setups like this.

FWIW, the .THM files are required for the camera to recognize the .MOV file. I tried to reload some files back to my CF card (5DII) w/o the sidecar, but the camera would respond with "no image data" without the .THM file.
