I just recently started shooting sports for a football league and curious to know how you carry your gear with you. I have an over the sholder camera bag but moving around and up and down the field, its not doing the trick. Any suggestions? Currently I only have a Canon 20D with a 28-70 and 75-300 but have a 70-200 on order around Christmas time.

Get a photographer's vest (external link) . . . Ideally you'll have one body for each lens so the cameras will be around your neck/over your shoulder ready to grab. Shove the batteries, cards, and anything else you need to have available into the vest pockets.

I use one of two things. A Lowepro S&F Utility belt and harness (external link), with lens bags on the belt, utility bags, water bottle, etc. I can hang my monopod

IMAGE: http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b87/maxselma/1708_1325_detail1.jpg

from the belt as well.

The other is the ThinkTank Rotation 360 (external link) backpack, which allows you to access it without taking it off. Look at the videos.

The Rotation 360 is my favorite backpack, but the harness and belt really gives you access to 100% of the stuff all the time. The ability to hang a monopod from the belt is a real plus in what your're doing around a field.

Perhaps you should look into a hip pack like so;

The vest idea is pretty good as well however, if you want to do it with some flare, I'd recommend this bad boy;

Considerably more expensive? Without a doubt. But there is nothing nicer looking than this IMO :D

Simple 20d and that 70-200mm when you get it. Why you need anything else? This is superlight setup as far as shooting football is concerned.

A vest for accessories. If you feel the need for 2 lenses, then you're better off with 2 bodies. You just want to grab and shoot, not fumble around changing lenses.

^ + 1. I use the Street & Field system, too. Lowepro's latest version of S&F is really good...

Fast access, very comfortable (the lumbar support offered by the Deluxe Technical Belt makes sure your back doesn't hurt after a 10 + hour day), and it actually looks quite good in my humble opinion :).

Good point. I had not really thought about it once I get to this point for football this is all I am going to need for the action shots.

If you want to go the whole nine yards, the S&F harness and belt setup can be used with two camera, one for your closeup shots and another for tele shots. I've used this several times, most recently on a trip to the Galapagos. You will not miss a single shot because of the need to change lenses.

Jay, unless I'm mistaken you're using the S&F Vest Harness (the previous generation) with the second generation (i.e. the new one) Deluxe Technical Belt, correct :) ?

I have the Deluxe Technical Belt as well and use it with the Technical Vest...It's a superb combination.

Joris,

That's correct, this is the discontinued version of the harness. I tried the new similar harness at B&H and found that they had narrowed and unpadded the shoulder harness, and that it was uncomfortable with any weight on it.

Avidmax had this better-padded, older version for a while and now I think they're sold out. As noted in the post above, the new vest-type harness has some good reviews, but it's full cover on the chest and might be hot in warm weather.

The belt is the new S&F Deluxe Utility belt, correct.

Think tank skins and or modular belt system. The most comfortable way I have found.

Forgot to mention the flexibility. You can add pieces as needed and grow the system as needed.
