This is my very first time trying some wedding photography please let me know what you think about these. I am not a wedding or even a people photographer and do mostly nature/wildlife/architecture/outdoor photos and I'm very much an amateur practicing with my very first DSLR, a Canon 300d. I thought I would bring my camera to the wedding and just see what I could do. I stayed out of the way of the real photographers that day but had fun just snapping a few photos..

lol, ok, just checking. good work for working in direct sunlight, but see if you can pull some detail back into her dress in #1 and #2. It's blown out badly. But direct sunlight is a PITA.

Thank you very much!! I will try working on it in Lightroom 3.. and Yes it was a PITA working in the direct light,, the wedding was at 1pm and the sun was directly over head.

Please don't take this the wrong way but on 2-5, how were you possibly out of the pro's way? Those look like they were shot straight on, which would have put you in the aisle.
Or were you family and in the front row? That would totally explain it ...

not bad for a first try in horrible conditions... i don't think many couples realize how tough it is for a photographer during this time of day. typically, i try to underexpose since it's way easier to bring back darks than blowouts. as for the etiquette regarding being in the main photographer's way, as long as you weren't messing up their captures, i think it's alright. Love moment you caught at the fountain!

i did the same recently, practicing shooting at a wedding while the Pros did their thing. got some good information chatting with them afterwards too. :)

It so difficult to get in “real world” practice and at the same time allowing pros to do their work. I understand. For me having someone shooting along is fine as long as they understand the workflow and stay clear. Especially when I expect to have the subject eyes at my camera lens and not the person off to my side. Very frustrating!

Firstly nothing you can do about conditions from bright sun, to wind, to rain, and all kinds of other stuff. That’s the life of a real-time pro event photographer … weddings. You just deal with it. For the romantic and other stage shots we bring all kinds of light modifiers. My favorite is a large California Bounce sun blocker.

Your images are fine for the first time out. Honestly not something I would expect in their album but for capturing the event not bad. I would encourage more character with direct individual shots of the bride and groom from side-to-side. Use your depth-of-field (2.8 or wider) to place emphasis what you want the viewer to focus on. Use “stuff” to help frame your images giving depth and focus.

Have fun and keep on shooting!
