Picture Style applied on screen when shooting in RAW?

Hey all -

I just downloaded a picture style called Technicolor CineStyle. Its for flat recording in video. So, I have that chosen as my picture style but when I take a photo in standard stills mode the image that comes up on the screen is very flat and low saturation - like that of the picture style. I thought picture styles were only supposed to apply to JPEGs and video? I shoot RAW in still mode and it's having an effect. Is this typical?

This is on my 7D.

What Raw software are you using? If it's DPP, then it should open the image and apply the Picture Style to your preview, although with Raw you can choose any Picture Style in DPP.

I didn't even get that far Tony- I am talking on the review on the camera. The picture style is definitely evident.

Well, yes -- the camera LCD review shows a jpeg that is embedded in the Raw file, using the Picture Style, so you are getting the expected behavior.

On your computer, what you see will depend on your Raw processing software. As I said, DPP reads your Picture Style and applies it to your preview, assuming that you have "taught" DPP your custom Picture Style.

Other Raw processors don't read and apply Picture Styles, so will have a different look from DPP and the in-camera preview.

Ok cool - I just figured the in camera preview would show a standard "raw" preview vs a picture style'd one. So I guess I will put it back to standard when shooting stills and my custom one for video.

Ah, yeah, if the custom one is for video, then choose something else for stills!

Actually, I have my bodies set to the Neutral Picture Style and with my Contrast and Saturation cranked all the way down. That way the preview and histogram more accurately represent the Raw capture. It can be useful when you are shooting Raw and want to get a bright exposure without blowing highlights.
