I am playing around with the idea of getting a Nikon (Traitor) just to have as a walk around. I thought about just using my 350D as a walk around but a) it's too small now for me and almost impractical to use and, b) I'd be to tempted to use my good lenses and I really want to use the Canon stuff mainly for professional stuff now that I am getting more and more work.

I am into gadgets (have been for many many years now) and if something works differently than something else to accomplish the same results, that's for me. I know shutter speed, aperture, ISO, etc is all the same on all cameras... I am talking about button locations for menus, etc. Even a completely different menu system intrigues me.

To me it helps keep the mind fresh and vibrant. It's like switching from an old push button phone to a 4G smart phone. I enjoy that type of change.

Anyway, I am looking. Funny thing is, I was looking at some Nikkor lenses today and found some nice 2.8 VR lenses but MAN are they expensive as hell so I may have to scratch this itch I have or have a heavy amount of anti itch creme applied.

I share your passion for gadgets. The kids are all grown and gone, so why not? However, don't know if I would go so far as the dark side. Personally, went grey, with a Micro 4/3 Oly E-P2 for a walk-around, toss-in-the-car camera. Compact mirrorless is just what you are possibly looking for. Come to think of it, there is the just announced Nikon V-1, but will Canon be close on their heels? Myself, as now vested in lenses, will upgrade to an E-P3 or another Micro 4/3.

I have an Android. An older one. The Incredible. Takes great photos. I can't wait until they figure out a way to put an APS-C sensor in these smart phones. That'll be awesome! :D

I think those "incredible" (no pun intended) ideas come from the period you have to stay and do nothing.... :D (Is it true ? :D)

After watching some videos this evening I think I may be leaning a different way as far as getting a nice carry around camera. I watched Digital Rev's reviews of the Fujifilm x100 and the Leica X1. I'm liking the Leica X1 but the wallet may have me leaning towards the Fujifilm x100.

I'm guessing what I really want is a DSLR style photo from a point and shoot sized camera and both of those have the APS-C sensors. I'll have to stop by a camera store one of these days and check them out.

I had several "compact" digicams with decent zooms and nice controls. Sadly, they all died, whereas my DSLRs "keep on ticking", each of them 5-6 years old, so I'm in no mood (or financial position) to shop around...

I tried out a Nikon D3S a couple of weeks ago, a friend was visiting from Canada and that's what she uses. It wasn't easy to use, I'm used to using my Canons. She found the same thing, not easy to switch when she used my cameras. After a couple of hours struggling with the switch, we swapped back to what we're used to.
If you want to try a Nikon, by all means do it. You don't need anyones permission here to try it.

Sounds like the G1X could be for you.

I have a G12 as a walk around - it's far better than pictures any phone can get but sill somewhat compact and portable for when I don't want to have to carry a DSLR.

If I was going to carry a DSLR as a walk around, that would just mean putting my 24-105 on it and leaving the rest of the lenses behind.
