My two sets of Odin's finally came in today. I have to agree with everyone else...the Odin's are amazing :D:D

I just sold off my FlexTT5s and AC3 last week. Although I do miss the speed of using the AC3, I definitely do not miss the 580ex ii issues.

My only complaint is that only one set works. Ace Digital Photo sent me an obviously used and returned package with a defective TCU, missing cables and batteries still in a receiver . Hopefully they have good customer service...

Wow, I've never liked Ace Digital, but that's just ridiculous! When I ordered mine, there were several vendors to choose from on Amazon.com, and I intentionally avoided ordering mine from Ace Digital and went with a totally unknown vendor called Green Mountain.

True, there is no pass through on it.

But, if you press the DOF preview button on your camera the flash will strobe as a modeling light which works well for focus assist.

But there is ETTL pass through with the Strato II

On the Transmitter, not the receiver.
Only the Odin system can transmit and receive E-TTL.

So long and thanks for all the flash

So with an Odin transmitter and a Strato II on an Einstein can I get the Einstein to fire in HSS and at what kind of power output? Has anyone tried this? I would also be using my 580s in HSS and woudl like the flashes and strobes to all be in HSS. Is that possible?

I'll have to check on the Strato II, but I'm getting the impression you may not aware this method of HSS is what is know as "tail method hyperysnc". Its not like FP HSS with a speedlight where you can work at any power level.

Tail method hypersync has some limitations, but you can also do it with the Radiopoppers you were asking about earlier, as well as Pixel Kings, and PocketWizard TT1/5 which has an adjustable timing. You can even hack it yourself with regular radio trigger and an optic slave attached to an ETTL speedlight on camera. All of these give different results depending on which camera model, lights and triggers your using.

Regarding power, your a few stops behind staying at X-sync and using an ND filter for example, but the ABs should have generally enough power anyway. Its arguable whether an ND filter is a better solution, they both have good and bad points. But for freezing action in bright ambient light for example an ND filter won't help, you still need that fast shutter speed so thats one place Hypersync can be very usefull.

Yes and that is my dilemma. I will be using the 1D4 and one or 2 Einsteins. I just want my triggers to also work well with my 580s which is the reason I am afraid of the PW.

I totally understand the dilemma, my thoughts would be if you really do need (as previously mentioned) flash on camera, focus assist light, 1/3rd stop manual, and fire/control Einsteins. I would at this stage wait to see -

- Firstly what the new Canon RF system is like

- But also what the 600ex is like with PocketWizards, as they still have the most integrated system for control of the Einsteins as well. The AC3 controller is great.

I can't imagine Canon would not have fixed the flash tube venting as they already did with the 430exII, its just a matter of RF noise still or anything else that could cause issues with the PW.

According to canon the 600 will not be compatible with any external radio trigger.

I doubt that has anything to do with external triggers firing them, just compatibility with their own RF trigger system.

Well I guess we will have to wait and see. It should be interesting. Canon offers no way to use there system with any other strobe with any Canon offered trigger. They just want you to buy only 600s I guess.

There are two models of the 600 rite? So let me get this correct, neither one will work if mounted on say a Phottix receiver and triggered from the TCU?

I just checked and I can confirm SS of 1/8000th with no curtain showing on both my Einsteins and Alienbees. That's pretty awesome.

Are you using the odin receiver plugged into the Einstein? Did you use full power on the Einstein to test this or some lower level?

Rec'd my Odin TCU and two receivers today. Took a few test shots, they worked right out of the box. Packaged with Energizer batteries, not some cheap knock off batteries.

I did order mine through Amazon, but it was fufilled by the previously mentioned Ace Digital. Shipping was on time and these seem to be brand new in original packaging, no issues. Never purchased from Ace before, but so far a good experience.
