Got my tx/rx combo in today! Used but looks practically new and works great. Here's a with/without comparison. Nothing at all awesome composition-wise and no processing except for importing into Lightroom 4--just a quick test and demo. 5D, 580EX camera right (slightly behind me) pointed upward with Stofen Omnibounce, window camera left.

With flash:

Without flash:

Tested it indoors and outdoors in blinding midday light, flash in front and behind, above and below, line of sight and no line of sight; etc. You name it, I tried it, and it worked. This. Is. Awesome.

Quick question: anybody know if this can be used on a non-Canon camera? I'm assuming if it can then the TTL won't work but at least I could shoot with manual flash power, right? I want to try it on an Olympus E-P3 but don't want to fry it. Would the transmitter be able to fire on a non-Canon camera?

Couple of quick tries with my 580EX II and 430EX II and works great right out of the box.\

I did upgrade the firmware, had some issues doing it, but got it to work...

Looking forward to trying it out in practice.

Unfortunately no, we tried a number of ways and it definitely won't fire at all unless its connected to all the ETTL contacts of a Canon Camera.

Thanks for the info. Can't have it all, eh?

Has anyone tested the Odins with a 5d mkIII? I am quite interested in this. There are already a few threads about the PWs not working right with it.

Hmmm, after reading all these posts about the Phottix Odin I might just sell my Pocket Wizard system after all. I have three Flex TT5 units and an AC3 controller. I saw a kit online that sells one of the Phottix transmitters and two of the receivers for $449. That should be enough to replace what I have. Too bad I can't mount a flash onto the Phottix transmitter, so I could use it to help me focus in low light, but I already couldn't do that when I had the AC3 mounted onto the TT5 on-camera anyway.
I did read a few reviews of the Phottix system that said it wasn't able to switch the remote flashes from E-TTL to Manual, like I can do with the PW system. Is this true?

You can mount an ST-E2 above the camera on a small bracket to have a focus assist light. That requires an extra reciever too but at least you can do it. You can't do that with the AC3 if you wanted to unfortunately.

You can absolutely switch the remote flashes to manual just like the PW. Its just that you leave the actual flash set to ETTL and the Odin does the manual part from the Tx. Thats the same with PW.

Wow, talk about cumbersome! Lack of an easy way to have an on-camera flash when the transmitter is in use is the main drawback to me. It remains to be seen how much that will matter for my use.

Hey, thanks for the link. Very thorough post and a good starting point to explore all the functionality of the Odin system.

Hehe... you think that is cumbersome! You're going to love the PocketWizard work around then :D -
(ironically you need the Phottix cord to do it)

No issues so far. I haven't used it in ETTL mode yet though, only manual.

Can't you simply use the modelling light on TCU and use that as a focus assist light?

II can't imagine Canon would not have fixed the flash tube venting as they already did with the 430exII, its just a matter of RF noise still or anything else that could cause issues with the PW.

There is no problem with flash tube venting on the 580EXII. That is the manufactured excuse by PW they came up with to cover their butts because the PW Flex was blowing up the 580EXII. I've use the heck out of my 580EXII since 2009, shooting weddings, pressers and night clubs and averaging about 300-400 pops a week since 2009. No problems.

I've got PW Plus IIIs on preorder (since February...don't get me started...).

I've been considering the Pixel Kings, and now these have caught my eye.

I haven't seen much on max shutter speeds using strobes. I have a flashpoint 600W monolight, and was wondering if anyone has the same (or similar), and what your max shutter speed has been (reliably).
