I'll be visiting these three cities at the end of December, and I'm looking for good photo ideas, as well as trying to determine what lenses to take with me.

Help me out, and post your work! Much appreciated!

I'll see if I can upload some ones from Moscow in the coming days. I am not sure if these will be opened during your visit, but many miss the opportunities to shoot from:

Ivan the Great Bell Tower

The other is the colonnade of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior.

There are tons of places to go. Are you limited to a tour group? Will you be in Moscow on 31/12?

Budapest is sooo photogenic its disgusting. Its also a lot of fun. Try to get out on the bridges for city panos.

Cheers guys!

Many thanks on the tips, especially the Great Bell Tower, that seems really cool. It'll just be my wife and I, we always avoid tours and groups. We do already intend to go to Bolshoi Theatre for ballet.

I will depart Moscow the day after Christmas, and my entire trip wraps up before New Years.

Stockholm:

Advice: It will be cold , it will probably be ice on all the water and the town is on water. Also take a street up or down from where the tourists are... espacally in The Old Town. There is very many nice possiblities there but not where all the people go.

As for some of mine (most of mine is...)

Moscow is a rather colorless city. Depending on the amount of snow or melting snow, I found duck shoes to be worthwhile. Expect to get salt and even more salt rings around your shoes/boots. Also the daylight hours will be very short. Being you are from Edinburgh, you are probably pretty accustomed to most of the above.

It helps being able to read and speak Russian, but you will find most Russians can speak English. Don't be afraid to ask for directions. The public transit is not a bad way to get around town either.

Though it is against state law, you can expect to pay extra for being a foreigner in some exhibits. To take photographs will cost you extra in some areas too.

In the Red Square area you also have Saint Basil's (you can enter and tour <at last check you will pay extra for being a foreigner>;) and both shopping malls as well as the Lenin Museum adjacent to Red Square will allow you to warm up. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is not a far walk (make sure you and your wife dress to the church code). Several bridges over the Moscow River will allow you nice shots of the Kremlin. Most bridges have enough wide sidewalks or a viewing area at each end of the bridge. Red Square at this time should also have the tree and probably the ice rink up. If Red Square is closed, just try back at a different hour or different day. You also may come across school kids attending pre-New Years celebrations in the Kremlin (great opportunity to photograph joyous kids). There are also a few smaller churches at the old Hotel Rossiya site (about 100 meters out from Saint Basils).

To name only a few more...

Novodevichy Cemetery is always nice and not too far of a walk from the closet Metro stop. The Novodevichy Convent is next door to the Cemetery. In this area is also a view of the newer business district and a small park with a lake.

The Museum of the Great Patriotic War also has some scenic views and is a good museum.

Your planned visit to the Bolshoi should be nice especially with the reconstruction just being completed. Lubyanka Square is right up the street too. I am told you can take a tour of the KGB building, but never tried it.

You can easily tour as many of the Metro stations as you wish on one ticket. The best time is late night or early weekend mornings. http://www.lonelyplanet.com …+Experience?destId=360415 (external link)

I never had a problem in Moscow, but am always on guard the most around the busier train stations.

If you have the chance to get up to Sergiyev Posad (Zargorsk), I would recommend it. Again, make sure your wife has the proper head gear for religious sites.

Though Moscow is mainly business and residential there are some very nice parks for strolling and relaxing (best in warmer weather). I am not sure if the zoo would be worth a visit in the winter and don't fall in the traps of going to VDNKh or Izmailovsky. VDNKh does, however, have some nice outdoor sites (a nice space museum (mainly indoor), Ostankino is not far away and the statue of the Worker and Kolkhoz Woman.

If Ostankino Tower can be a nice very depending on the weather. http://www.tvtower.ru/52_SmotrovyaPl/eng/ (external link)

Virre, thank you for sharing!

That's a fine write-up, Tandan, many thanks for taking the time to do so. :)

This thread is becoming a wealth of information and I am indebted to you all! It'll be super cold but I can't wait!

A few from out and about in Budapest, you sure have picked what should be an Icey cold trip to take at the end of December, daytime temperatures should be well below zero in all three places so wrap up warm.... Despite saying that I have three recommendations for Budapest, 2 of which are near city square with some outdoor iceskating infront of the castle and the second a dip in the thermally heated waters of szecheny outdoor spa, both are fantastic experiences and offer superb photgraphic opportunities. The third would be to check out the Christmas market in Vorosmarty ter, not the best in the world be pretty cool and the food is out of this world if you like big and hearty :D
